Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto believes his team's historic Test victory over Australia in Darwin has shown the progress Bangladesh cricket has made, while the heavy defeat in Mackay has provided valuable lessons ahead of their upcoming tour of South Africa. Veteran legspinner Karn Sharma has announced his retirement from international and Indian domestic cricket at the age of 38, bringing the curtain down on a career that spanned nearly two decades. The Railways cricketer announced his decision on Saturday night following a UP T20 League match between Kanpur Superstars and Meerut Mavericks. He will play his final game during his team's last match of the Lucknow leg on August 25. "I now want to retire. I am extremely grateful to my family, BCCI, Railways, UPCA, Andhra, Vidarbha Cricket Association and everyone who has supported me throughout this journey," Karn said after making the announcement. "After this, I will be available for coaching and other responsibilities related to the game of cricket." Karn made his first-class, List A and T20 debuts during the 2007-08 domestic season and initially developed as an allrounder. He made an immediate impact, scoring a century on his Ranji Trophy debut. His breakthrough season came in 2012-13, when he claimed 21 wickets at an average of 19.04 in three Ranji Trophy matches. His performances earned him the BCCI's Best Under-25 Cricketer award and helped put him on the national selectors' radar. In 2014, Sunrisers Hyderabad bought Karn for INR 3.75 crore at the IPL auction, making him the most expensive uncapped Indian player at the time. His performances soon earned him an international call-up for India's tour of England. Karn made his T20I debut on that tour and dismissed England batter Joe Root. He subsequently joined India's ODI squad for the series against Sri Lanka and made his debut in the memorable match in which Rohit Sharma scored 264, still the highest individual score in men's ODI cricket. His journey also included stints with Vidarbha and Andhra before he returned to Railways. Karn last played in the IPL for Mumbai Indians in 2025 and remained part of the Railways setup across all three formats during the 2025-26 domestic season. Karn finishes his first-class career just three matches short of 100 appearances. Across 97 first-class matches, he claimed 270 wickets at an average of 27.60, including 14 five-wicket hauls. With the bat, he scored 2,866 runs in 138 innings, including two centuries and 14 half-centuries. Marnus Labuschagne’s place in Australia’s Test team is under serious scrutiny after another disappointing batting performance against Bangladesh in the second Test at Mackay. Sri Lanka captain Dhananjaya de Silva has called for the emergence of more genuinely fast bowlers, saying he would like the national team to have “two or three bowlers” capable of consistently bowling above 140kph. Sri Lanka have increasingly looked to field two seamers in Test cricket, with Asitha Fernando established as the team’s leading fast bowler. Fernando has built his reputation on consistency, accuracy and intensity while operating around the 130kph mark. However, Sri Lanka have sought greater variation by pairing him with a faster bowler, with Lahiru Kumara currently occupying that role. Kumara has taken 106 wickets in 36 Tests at an average of 36.38, but his career has been interrupted by repeated injuries. He also struggled in the first Test against India in Galle, returning figures of 2 for 104. “Even with Lahiru Kumara, we have tried very hard to get him to play injury-free,” de Silva said ahead of the second Test. “At the moment, given our resources, Lahiru Kumara is the best match to partner Asitha. Asitha’s line and length is perfect, and Lahiru Kumara has the pace. With the resources we have now, these are the best players.” Despite backing the current combination, de Silva believes Sri Lanka need a wider pool of fast-bowling options, particularly bowlers capable of generating genuine pace. “I’d also like for there to be two or three bowlers who can bowl at more than 140kph, but unfortunately we only have one bowler like that in the Test set-up,” he said. Sri Lanka do have several quick bowlers in their wider system, including Dushmantha Chameera, Dilshan Madushanka and Matheesha Pathirana. Madushanka was part of Sri Lanka’s Test squad for the Galle match but was released to play domestic T20 cricket and was not included in the squad for the Test at SSC. Chameera, meanwhile, has played only 12 Tests, with his most recent appearance coming in 2021. His injury history, combined with his importance to Sri Lanka’s limited-overs teams, has resulted in the selectors managing his workload carefully. According to de Silva, there is currently no major plan to significantly expand the pool of fast bowlers available for Test cricket. The Sri Lanka captain also believes the team’s existing seamers need to develop greater confidence when playing on home pitches. “Foreign pace bowlers have taken five wickets in Galle, for instance, but recently, none of our seamers have done that at Galle or SSC,” de Silva said. “Our fast bowlers lack that confidence. If they can raise their game a little bit — by a few percent — we can move forward better as a team.” De Silva has made the use of two fast bowlers a consistent feature of his captaincy. In previous years, Sri Lanka frequently relied heavily on spin at home and often selected just one specialist seamer. “Every match we’ve played under me, we’ve had two pace bowlers, when in the past, we would only bowl one,” de Silva said. “I believe pacers have a role to play in Sri Lanka. If your fast bowlers can get wickets here, they can get wickets anywhere. That’s something we have to learn quickly.” The statistics highlight Sri Lanka’s struggles to produce five-wicket hauls from fast bowlers on home soil. In the past 15 years, only Nuwan Pradeep has taken a five-wicket haul for Sri Lanka in a Test in the country, claiming 6 for 132 against India in 2017. By contrast, visiting fast bowlers have taken 14 five-wicket hauls in Sri Lanka during the same period. Mitchell Starc and Junaid Khan have each achieved the feat three times. For de Silva, the challenge is not simply about finding bowlers who can bowl quickly but developing a stronger fast-bowling culture within Sri Lankan Test cricket. “I’m hoping we will produce more cricketers like that in future,” he said. De Silva believes that developing a stronger group of fast bowlers could give the team greater variety and help them compete more effectively, both in Sri Lanka and overseas.

That weakness was exposed in the first Test in Galle, where Prabath Jayasuriya and debutant Keshara Nuwantha were outperformed by India’s trio of Manav Suthar, Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav. Suthar, in particular, impressed on debut with his control, variations and ability to extract natural assistance from the surface. The toss could again prove crucial in Colombo. In Galle, the conditions changed dramatically across the five days, with batting becoming increasingly difficult as the match progressed. Sri Lanka will be desperate to win the toss on Sunday and make the most of the better batting conditions expected early in the game. India, meanwhile, enter the Test with confidence after a comprehensive performance in Galle. Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna showed that India’s pace attack can also make an impact in Sri Lankan conditions, while their three-pronged spin attack remains a major strength. India will also be encouraged by the prospect of a result at the SSC, despite the venue traditionally offering less assistance to fast bowlers. After their strong showing in the opening Test, anything short of another victory will likely be viewed as a disappointment for the visitors. Sri Lanka hit by injury problems Sri Lanka have been forced into several changes because of injuries and selection decisions. Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis have not recovered, while Dinesh Chandimal has been ruled out after suffering a concussion. Nishan Madushka and spinner Ramesh Mendis have also been left out, paving the way for Kamil Mishara to make his Test debut. Pasindu Sooriyabandara is expected to receive another opportunity after an unfortunate debut in Galle. He came in as a substitute for the concussed Chandimal and was dismissed with his first ball, although he had earlier taken a fine catch before Chandimal was officially ruled out. Sonal Dinusha is another player Sri Lanka will hope can make an impact. The batting all-rounder looked comfortable against India’s spinners in Galle and narrowly missed out on scoring centuries in both innings. His composure could encourage Sri Lanka to move him higher up the order. Suthar makes immediate impact India’s decision to hand Manav Suthar a prominent role has already paid dividends. The young spinner bowled before Jadeja in both innings in Galle and made an immediate impression by taking a wicket with his first ball in Test cricket. Suthar demonstrated excellent control, bowled long spells and varied his pace and seam position as the pitch began to offer more turn. His ability to adapt quickly will be closely watched as he faces a different challenge at the SSC. Kuldeep Yadav, meanwhile, remains under scrutiny after taking just one wicket in his comeback Test. Although he produced threatening spells, he was at times the least effective of India’s three spinners. With a Test average of just over 23, Kuldeep's quality is unquestioned, but his limited opportunities have raised questions about his rhythm and match sharpness. India are expected to give him another opportunity in Colombo. India eye another victory India’s probable XI is expected to remain largely unchanged, with KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal opening the batting, followed by Devdutt Padikkal and captain Shubman Gill. Rishabh Pant, Dhruv Jurel and Ravindra Jadeja provide further batting depth, while Suthar and Kuldeep are expected to lead the spin attack alongside Siraj and Krishna. The weather forecast suggests better conditions than those seen in Galle, although rain remains a possibility. The Colombo pitch is expected to be drier, with some grass offering the fast bowlers at least a visual encouragement. For Sri Lanka, the challenge is clear: their spinners must find a way to match India’s attack. For India, the objective is equally straightforward—finish the series with another victory and strengthen their position in the World Test Championship. The second Test therefore carries very different stakes for the two teams. Sri Lanka are fighting to avoid another home series defeat, while India have the opportunity to underline their dominance and keep their WTC campaign firmly on track. Zubin Bharucha has joined Mumbai Indians (MI) as the franchise’s new Director of Performance, bringing with him extensive experience from his long association with the Rajasthan Royals (RR). Bharucha, who has been associated with RR since the inaugural season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2008, will work closely with Mumbai Indians’ existing multidisciplinary leadership group across various performance-related areas. According to the franchise, Bharucha will be part of MI’s integrated support staff and will contribute to the team’s established approach towards player development and sustained performance. Bharucha has been assigned a specific role focused on working with Indian players during the IPL off-season. He will operate alongside MI assistant coach Paras Mhambrey at the franchise’s Mumbai hub throughout the year and coordinate with the coaching staff to establish and achieve individual performance targets for players. The former Mumbai cricketer has already begun his new responsibilities. Bharucha and Mhambrey are currently accompanying a group of young Mumbai Indians players on a tour of South Africa. Bharucha began his cricket career in Mumbai, representing the city at age-group level before making his Ranji Trophy debut during the 1992-93 season. He played 17 first-class matches and 11 List A games before making his final appearance in the 1994-95 season. Highly regarded in Mumbai cricket circles for his knowledge and understanding of the game, Bharucha joined Rajasthan Royals as team director in 2008. He spent two seasons with Delhi Daredevils, now Delhi Capitals, as technical director in 2016 and 2017 before returning to Rajasthan Royals in 2018 as their Director of Cricket. He remained in that position until 2025, making his move to Mumbai Indians a significant change after nearly two decades of involvement with the Royals. Mumbai Indians, five-time IPL champions, have endured a challenging period in recent seasons. The franchise has missed the playoffs in four of the last six seasons, finishing ninth or tenth on three occasions. Bharucha will now join an experienced MI support staff that includes head coach Mahela Jayawardene, batting coach Kieron Pollard and bowling coach Lasith Malinga. India head coach Gautam Gambhir has called for more three-match Test series, arguing that two-Test contests do not always give teams enough opportunity to recover from an early setback and produce a compelling series narrative. Speaking in Colombo on the eve of the second Test against Sri Lanka, Gambhir said he would ideally like Test series to consist of at least three matches. India entered the second Test with a 1-0 lead after defeating Sri Lanka by 165 runs in Galle. “Ideally, I would want a three-match Test series,” Gambhir said. “I've always believed that there should always be a possibility that a team losing the first Test match can come back and win the series. You can't do that in a two-Test series — the most you can do is draw the series.” Gambhir also dismissed concerns about the additional time required for longer series, saying that a short turnaround between Test matches is manageable and is already common among international teams. The India coach pointed to some of India's own experiences to underline his argument. India had to recover from a 1-0 deficit during their 2015 tour of Sri Lanka before going on to win the three-match series. He also highlighted India's remarkable comeback against Australia during the 2020-21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. India lost the opening Test in Adelaide before winning in Melbourne, drawing in Sydney and securing a famous victory in Brisbane to take the series 2-1. “I still remember that series, between India and Australia, where India was one down, and they still managed to come back, and win that series 2-1,” Gambhir said. “Normally, if you have those three Test matches, it's always worth it.” The issue of Test-series length has become increasingly significant as the international schedule features a large number of two-match contests. Apart from major Test-playing nations such as India, Australia and England, most teams frequently play series consisting of only two matches. Sri Lanka, for instance, have only six two-Test series scheduled during the ongoing World Test Championship cycle. South Africa, the reigning World Test champions, also had a relatively limited Test schedule during the cycle in which they secured the championship. Gambhir's comments come amid an ongoing debate about the future of Test cricket and the need to provide teams with enough matches to compete in meaningful series. For the India coach, three-Test contests offer a better balance by allowing teams to respond to defeats and ensuring that a series is not effectively decided after just one match.
