About

Rovman Powell, a powerful batsman from Jamaica, is known for his prowess in limited-overs cricket and his leadership skills. With extensive captaincy experience in domestic tournaments and T20 leagues, he was named West Indies’ T20I captain in 2023.

Raised by his mother in Kingston, Powell’s career took off when he made his List-A debut in early 2015, earning Man of the Match honors in his first game. Just over a year later, he debuted for West Indies in an ODI tri-series in Zimbabwe. Known for his big hitting, Powell played his first T20I against Pakistan in Bridgetown in 2017. He also bowls occasional medium pace.

Powell was instrumental in Jamaica’s run to the final of the 2016-17 Regional Super50 and was picked by Jamaica Tallawahs in the 2017 CPL draft. Later, he captained Jamaica to a Super50 title in 2022 and led the Tallawahs to a CPL championship the same year. He hit his first T20I century against England in 2022 and followed it with consistent performances in India and Bangladesh. After captaining West Indies intermittently, he became full-time T20I captain in 2023 after Nicholas Pooran stepped down. However, Powell’s ODI career didn’t flourish due to inconsistent form.

Like many West Indies players, Powell spends much of the year competing in global T20 leagues. He was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders in 2018 but didn’t play a game. In 2022, Delhi Capitals signed him for INR 2.8 crores, where he featured regularly with quickfire innings. However, he struggled to replicate this success for Rajasthan Royals in 2024.
