About

In a country long in search of a genuine seam-bowling all-rounder, Nitish Kumar Reddy is fast emerging as the answer. Tall, athletic, and supremely confident, Reddy brings a rare balance to any side he plays for — with the ability to bat in the top order and deliver quality overs of medium-fast seam bowling.

From Vizag Prodigy to National Prospect

Hailing from Visakhapatnam, Reddy’s journey began early. He picked up a cricket bat at the age of five and quickly made a mark at the junior level in Andhra Pradesh. His all-round potential was first identified by former India selector MSK Prasad, who saw something special in Reddy during U12 and U14 state-level tournaments.

Prasad’s guidance led Reddy to train at the Andhra Cricket Academy in Kadapa, and it didn’t take long for the youngster to explode onto the national radar. His breakout came in the 2016–17 Vijay Merchant Trophy, where he smashed a stunning 441 runs off 345 balls against Nagaland — one of the most eye-catching performances at that level. With the ball, he was just as lethal, picking up 26 wickets in the tournament and being named the Best Cricketer in the U16 category.

IPL Breakthrough with Sunrisers Hyderabad

Reddy’s hard work and potential paid off when he was picked up by Sunrisers Hyderabad for his base price in the 2023 IPL auction. Though he featured in just two games in his debut season, the franchise kept faith — and it was rewarded handsomely the following year.

In IPL 2024, Reddy showed flashes of brilliance with both bat and ball. Batting in the middle order, he struck two half-centuries at a strike rate of 142, showcasing his power and maturity. He also chipped in with three crucial wickets, further underlining his value as a dual-threat player.

International Impact: Making a Mark Across Formats

His strong IPL performances quickly earned him a place in the Indian T20I squad, and Reddy didn’t take long to impress. On his debut series against Bangladesh, he scored a commanding 74, dismantling spinners Rishad Hossain and Mehidy Hasan with ease — quickly gaining a reputation as a spin-basher.

That fearless approach earned him a fast-track into the Test squad, and he made his debut at the challenging Optus Stadium in Perth. On a pitch offering pace and bounce, Reddy rose to the occasion — scoring runs in both innings and claiming the key wicket of Mitchell Marsh. His fearless, all-action style of play won praise from former cricketers and commentators alike, many of whom see in him the promise of a long-term all-format player for India.

The Road Ahead

At just 21, Nitish Kumar Reddy has already ticked several boxes — junior cricket prodigy, IPL performer, international match-winner. His ability to deliver with bat and ball across conditions makes him a rare and exciting commodity in Indian cricket.

As India looks to build a well-rounded squad for the next phase of international cricket, Reddy’s rise couldn’t be more timely. If nurtured well, he could well be the all-rounder Indian cricket has long waited for.
