However, Shahbaz and Gharami turned the game decisively in East's favour with a massive partnership, taking their side's total to 467. Shahbaz's 167 was the standout innings, while Gharami contributed a composed 146. With the bat, East Zone established a lead of 356 runs, putting enormous pressure on their opponents. North East Zone's first innings quickly unravelled. After reaching 78 for 3, they lost their remaining wickets rapidly and were bowled out for 111. Abhijit Sarkar was the chief destroyer, finishing with five wickets for 20 runs, while Shahbaz also made an impact with 3 for 20. Forced to bat again, North East Zone lost Arpit Bhatewara, their top scorer from the first innings, to Mukesh Kumar early on the third morning. Mohammed Shami then produced a testing spell in overcast conditions, repeatedly beating the outside edges without finding a wicket. East's spinners subsequently took control. Bowling from around the wicket, he maintained a tight wicket-to-wicket line and mixed his arm ball with subtle changes of pace to keep the batters under constant pressure. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi added to North East's troubles by taking two wickets in an over. He first induced Kishan Lyngdoh into a miscue over the covers before drawing an outside edge from Imliwati Lemtur, with Kishan completing the catch. Akash Chaudhary and Pheiroijam Jotin briefly delayed the inevitable with a 39-run stand for the ninth wicket. Roy, however, returned to finish the innings and complete his five-wicket haul. North East Zone were bowled out for 146 shortly after lunch, giving East Zone a comprehensive innings victory. India’s 2026-27 domestic cricket season is set to begin with the Duleep Trophy in Bengaluru on Sunday, with several emerging talents, established stars and India hopefuls under the spotlight. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi faces red-ball test One of the biggest attractions will be 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who will represent East Zone after an impressive breakthrough IPL campaign earned him his India T20I debut in England earlier this year. While his white-ball credentials have already attracted considerable attention, his record in red-ball cricket remains a work in progress. Sooryavanshi has averaged just 17.25 from 12 innings across three spells in the Ranji Trophy’s Plate League, with his campaigns interrupted by India Under-19 commitments. J&K players make their mark Jammu & Kashmir players have historically struggled to break into a North Zone side dominated by representatives from Delhi, Punjab and Haryana. That has changed significantly following J&K’s historic maiden Ranji Trophy title triumph earlier this year. Six J&K players, including captain Kanhaiya Wadhawan, have now been included in the North Zone squad. Opener Qamran Iqbal is among the most intriguing selections. He was not originally part of the J&K squad for the Ranji Trophy final against Karnataka but received a late call-up after Shubham Khajuria was injured. The 23-year-old topped the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy run charts with 950 runs, displaying the consistency and maturity that have made him a player to watch for India A and beyond. Prithvi Shaw, meanwhile, will be looking to build on his encouraging 2025-26 domestic season. Once regarded as one of India’s brightest batting prospects, Shaw has not been close to Test selection since the 2020-21 tour of Australia. After overcoming fitness and disciplinary setbacks, he returned to form for Maharashtra and demonstrated that his aggressive batting style remains intact. His 222 off 156 balls against Chandigarh was the third-fastest double-century in Ranji Trophy history. Sarfaraz Khan is another player whose performances will attract considerable attention. After returning to India’s Test squad following a two-year absence, Sarfaraz will join West Zone for the semi-finals after the Sri Lanka tour. With five Tests against Australia scheduled early next year, his ability to dominate spin will be particularly important as he seeks to establish himself as a regular member of India’s Test middle order. Patidar will spearhead Central Zone's campaign as they look to retain the title in the season-opening domestic tournament. Rinku Singh has been appointed vice-captain, adding further experience to a squad that blends established performers with emerging talent. Among the notable inclusions is Madhya Pradesh all-rounder Saransh Jain, who recently earned a place in India's Test squad for the tour of Sri Lanka.
