India’s 2026-27 domestic cricket season is set to begin with the Duleep Trophy in Bengaluru on Sunday, with several emerging talents, established stars and India hopefuls under the spotlight. After experimenting with a four-team format in 2024-25, the tournament returns to the traditional inter-zonal structure for the second successive season. With India’s road to the next World Test Championship final beginning to take shape, and the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at home early next year expected to carry enormous significance, performances in the Duleep Trophy, Irani Cup and Ranji Trophy will be closely monitored. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi faces red-ball test One of the biggest attractions will be 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who will represent East Zone after an impressive breakthrough IPL campaign earned him his India T20I debut in England earlier this year. While his white-ball credentials have already attracted considerable attention, his record in red-ball cricket remains a work in progress. Sooryavanshi has averaged just 17.25 from 12 innings across three spells in the Ranji Trophy’s Plate League, with his campaigns interrupted by India Under-19 commitments. The Duleep Trophy will provide him with an important opportunity to prove that those numbers do not reflect his true potential. The programme focused on technical development, strength and conditioning, workload management, recovery and performance analysis. His former coach Manish Ojha also contributed to his preparations. The camp included sessions against spin on turning surfaces as well as practice on red-soil pitches designed to improve his back-foot play against bounce. Sooryavanshi will get an immediate opportunity to put those lessons into practice when East Zone begin their campaign against North East Zone. Led by Ishan Kishan, East Zone could give the teenager at least two red-ball matches during the tournament. J&K players make their mark Jammu & Kashmir players have historically struggled to break into a North Zone side dominated by representatives from Delhi, Punjab and Haryana. That has changed significantly following J&K’s historic maiden Ranji Trophy title triumph earlier this year. Six J&K players, including captain Kanhaiya Wadhawan, have now been included in the North Zone squad. Opener Qamran Iqbal is among the most intriguing selections. He was not originally part of the J&K squad for the Ranji Trophy final against Karnataka but received a late call-up after Shubham Khajuria was injured. Iqbal responded with an unbeaten 160 in the second innings to prevent Karnataka from mounting a late winning charge. Iqbal, who previously opened alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal for India Under-19s, could now partner Delhi’s Sanat Sangwan at the top of the order for North Zone. Shami, Arshdeep and Nabi eye India return At 35, Mohammed Shami continues to fight for a return to India’s Test team. Having last played a Test in 2023, Shami has endured a series of injuries but remains determined to extend his international career. His performances in the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy demonstrated that hunger. Shami claimed 37 wickets in seven matches and has repeatedly spoken about using his time outside the India set-up as motivation to remain prepared. A successful Duleep Trophy campaign could put him back into the selection conversation, particularly with injuries affecting several Indian fast bowlers. Arshdeep Singh will also be looking to strengthen his credentials in red-ball cricket. Despite being an important part of India’s white-ball plans, he has had limited opportunities in the Test format. His ability to exploit movement could make him particularly valuable in favourable conditions, and a strong Duleep Trophy campaign could enhance his prospects ahead of India’s tour of New Zealand in October-November. Auqib Nabi is another player with plenty to prove. After taking 104 wickets across the last two Ranji Trophy seasons, the J&K pacer has emerged as one of the most exciting domestic fast-bowling prospects. If North Zone reach the latter stages of the Duleep Trophy, Nabi could join the team after the Sri Lanka tour and make another push for India selection. R Smaran is among the leading names. The 23-year-old topped the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy run charts with 950 runs, displaying the consistency and maturity that have made him a player to watch for India A and beyond. Prithvi Shaw, meanwhile, will be looking to build on his encouraging 2025-26 domestic season. Once regarded as one of India’s brightest batting prospects, Shaw has not been close to Test selection since the 2020-21 tour of Australia. After overcoming fitness and disciplinary setbacks, he returned to form for Maharashtra and demonstrated that his aggressive batting style remains intact. His 222 off 156 balls against Chandigarh was the third-fastest double-century in Ranji Trophy history. Sarfaraz Khan is another player whose performances will attract considerable attention. After returning to India’s Test squad following a two-year absence, Sarfaraz will join West Zone for the semi-finals after the Sri Lanka tour. With five Tests against Australia scheduled early next year, his ability to dominate spin will be particularly important as he seeks to establish himself as a regular member of India’s Test middle order. A tournament with bigger implications The Duleep Trophy may be the first major event of India’s domestic season, but its significance extends well beyond the tournament itself. For teenagers such as Sooryavanshi, it is an opportunity to demonstrate readiness for the demands of first-class cricket. For J&K’s emerging stars, it represents another step towards breaking into the national conversation. And for established players such as Shami, Shaw and Sarfaraz, strong performances could revive or strengthen their hopes of wearing India’s Test cap. Bengaluru, August 1: Defending champions Central Zone have named India batter Rajat Patidar as captain for the upcoming Duleep Trophy, with the squad featuring fellow India internationals Rinku Singh, Harsh Dubey, and Yash Thakur. Patidar will spearhead Central Zone's campaign as they look to retain the title in the season-opening domestic tournament. Rinku Singh has been appointed vice-captain, adding further experience to a squad that blends established performers with emerging talent. Among the notable inclusions is Madhya Pradesh all-rounder Saransh Jain, who recently earned a place in India's Test squad for the tour of Sri Lanka. Jain is expected to lead the spin attack alongside left-arm spinning all-rounder Harsh Dubey and Uttar Pradesh leg-spinner Zeeshan Ansari, who marked his return to red-ball cricket after a five-year gap during the recent India A tour of Sri Lanka.
