Sri Lanka had previously been among the major cricketing nations without a formally recognised players’ association affiliated with the WCA, alongside countries such as India and Pakistan. The SLPCA now brings Sri Lanka closer to the player-representation structures already established in countries such as Australia, England and New Zealand. Platform to Address Player Concerns The formation of the association could also provide players with a central platform to address recurring issues between cricketers and Sri Lanka Cricket. Disagreements over no-objection certificates, fitness requirements and players’ participation in overseas franchise competitions have highlighted the need for a structured mechanism through which players can negotiate with administrators. Australia head coach Andrew McDonald says difficult decisions may be required over the participation of the team's leading Test players in next year's IPL, with the workload of the fast-bowling group a major concern ahead of a demanding Ashes campaign. Australia are set to embark on one of the busiest periods in their international calendar, beginning with a series against Bangladesh in Darwin and Mackay. Over the next 12 months, the team is scheduled to play 20 Tests and 14 white-ball internationals, with a possible World Test Championship final adding to the workload. "The important part of this period is that we're allowing our fast bowlers to reset their body, get everything in order to give themselves the best opportunity across the 20 or 21 games that everyone talks about." However, McDonald does not want to make decisions too far in advance. Instead, Australia will assess players throughout the season and make the final call on IPL participation after the five-Test tour of India. The coach pointed to several factors that could influence those decisions, including how much the fast bowlers are required to bowl in India and the mental workload faced by players such as Head during a lengthy overseas campaign. "The starting point is that you can do it all, and I think if you start from that point, then you can make decisions according to that." Australia faced a similar dilemma in 2023. Cummins, Starc and Head skipped the IPL that year and used the April-May window to recover and prepare for a packed schedule. All three subsequently played important roles in Australia's World Test Championship triumph, retention of the Ashes and ODI World Cup victory. Hazlewood, meanwhile, missed the Test tour of India because of injury and joined the IPL only in May as a replacement player before returning to international cricket. Cameron Green followed a different path. He remained in India for almost six months in 2023, playing the entire IPL before travelling directly to England for the Ashes. He struggled during the series, missed the third Test through injury and eventually lost his place as Mitchell Marsh returned to the Test side. Green also found himself out of Australia's ODI World Cup XI after the opening match, making only one further appearance as a replacement for Glenn Maxwell. Despite Green's difficult campaign, McDonald rejected the suggestion that his IPL involvement was responsible for his struggles. "People always attach form to the decision-making. They'll attach Greeny's challenges within the Ashes based upon potentially that the IPL didn't set him up to succeed in those conditions." McDonald argued that Green's lack of previous Ashes experience in England was a more significant factor and believes the experience will benefit him when Australia return for the next series. The Australian coach also rejected the broader idea that playing franchise cricket immediately before an international series necessarily harms a player's performance. As Australia prepare for an unprecedented stretch of international cricket, the IPL question is therefore likely to remain open until the final stages of the India Test tour. For McDonald and his management team, the priority will be finding the right balance between the commercial and competitive benefits of the IPL and ensuring Australia's key players — particularly their ageing fast-bowling attack — are physically and mentally ready for the Ashes and other major assignments ahead.
