About
Yashasvi Jaiswal’s cricketing journey is the stuff of dreams — a tale of sheer grit, perseverance, and prodigious talent. From sleeping in tents near Mumbai’s Azad Maidan to scoring centuries in iconic Test arenas around the world, the 23-year-old left-hander has rapidly established himself as one of Indian cricket’s brightest stars.
Humble Beginnings and a Hunger to Succeed
Born in Bhadohi, Uttar Pradesh, and the youngest of four children, Jaiswal moved to Mumbai at the age of 10 with hopes of making it big in cricket. The path was far from easy. He lived in makeshift tents near cricket grounds, surviving on minimal resources while relying solely on his cricketing talent to pave the way forward.
Despite the hardships, his performances at the junior level were staggering. Jaiswal reportedly scored 49 centuries in five years at age-group level, and that consistency earned him a place in the Indian U-19 side for the tour of Sri Lanka in 2018.
Though his international youth career started with modest returns — scores of 15 and 1 — he bounced back with a stunning 114 in the final to cement his spot. He followed that up with another century in the ACC U-19 Asia Cup, and his crowning moment came at the 2020 ICC U-19 World Cup, where he finished as the tournament's leading run-scorer, delivering a powerful statement to the cricketing world.
IPL and Domestic Breakthrough
Jaiswal’s exploits earned him an IPL contract with Rajasthan Royals, though his initial seasons in 2020 and 2021 were underwhelming. The franchise, however, saw his potential and retained him ahead of the 2022 mega auction — making him the second-youngest player to be retained in IPL history.
Their faith was rewarded. After piling up runs in domestic cricket, Jaiswal had a breakthrough IPL 2023 season, amassing 625 runs at an average of 48.08 and a blistering strike rate of over 160. His 13-ball fifty against Kolkata Knight Riders broke the record for the fastest half-century in IPL history, and his maiden century at the Wankhede against Mumbai Indians was a moment of personal and symbolic triumph.
A Dream Test Debut and Rapid Rise
Jaiswal’s IPL form opened the door to the Test team, and he made a dream debut against West Indies in July 2023, scoring a majestic 171 in his first innings — the highest score by an Indian debutant overseas — and earning Player of the Match honours.
Later that year, he broke into India’s T20I setup, playing in the Asian Games and scoring a hundred against Nepal, further proving his all-format capabilities.
Struggles Abroad, Redemption at Home
A challenging tour of South Africa followed, where Jaiswal struggled on seaming tracks and scored just 50 runs across two Tests. But he made a roaring comeback in India’s next Test assignment at home against England.
Jaiswal dominated the series, finishing as the leading run-scorer, headlined by back-to-back double centuries. His dazzling 214 in Rajkot featured a record-breaking 12 sixes, the most by any batter in a Test innings — a display of fearless aggression that captured the imagination of fans and pundits alike.
World Cup Glory and Continued Test Dominance
Although part of the 2024 T20 World Cup-winning squad, Jaiswal did not get a game. But his form didn’t dip. He continued to shine in Test cricket with solid returns against Bangladesh and New Zealand, before making yet another bold statement with a century in his first Test in Australia — at the challenging Optus Stadium in Perth.
By the end of 2024, Jaiswal had emerged as India’s leading Test run-scorer for the calendar year, underlining his growing stature as a mainstay in the longest format.
A Star in the Making
At just 23, Yashasvi Jaiswal’s journey from hardship to heroism stands as a testament to resilience and raw talent. Whether it’s turning up on tough wickets or lighting up the IPL, Jaiswal has already proven that he belongs on the biggest stages.
As India look to build a team for the next decade, few players embody the future quite like him — fearless, focused, and hungry for more.
