Australian opener Jake Weatherald is set to join Warwickshire for the early stages of the 2027 County Championship season as he looks to regain his form ahead of next summer’s Ashes series. The 31-year-old was recently dropped from Australia’s Test squad after a disappointing start to his international career. Weatherald made his Test debut in the first match of the 2025-26 Ashes series but has managed just 20.36 as his batting average after six Tests. His latest scores of 0 and 23 came during Australia’s shock defeat to Bangladesh, prompting the selectors to replace him with Matt Renshaw. Renshaw is expected to open alongside Travis Head in the second Test in Mackay. Weatherald will now return to England after an impressive first county stint with Leicestershire earlier this year. Former India Women chief selector and legendary spinner Neetu David has been appointed chief scout of UP Warriorz (UPW) ahead of the upcoming Women’s Premier League (WPL) season. She replaces former Bengal allrounder Rajib Dutta and will work alongside head coach Abhishek Nayar. David brings extensive experience in Indian women’s cricket to the role. During her playing career, the left-arm spinner represented India in 10 Tests and 97 ODIs between 1995 and 2008, taking 182 wickets across formats. “Having spent so many years playing and working within Indian women's cricket, I have seen the tremendous amount of talent that exists across the country,” David said in a statement released by the franchise. “For me, scouting is not only about identifying performances, but also recognising potential and understanding what a player can become with the right opportunities and environment. I look forward to working with UP Warriorz to identify exciting young cricketers and contribute towards building a strong talent pipeline for the franchise.” David served as the chairperson of India’s women’s selection committee from September 2020 until September 2025. The committee under her leadership selected the India squad that went on to win the 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup. She also holds the record for the best bowling figures in an innings in women’s Test cricket. In 2024, David became only the second Indian woman to be inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame. UP Warriorz reached the playoffs in the inaugural WPL season in 2023 but have struggled in subsequent editions, finishing at the bottom of the points table in both 2025 and 2026. Sri Lanka batter Niroshan Dickwella found himself at the centre of a light-hearted exchange with India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal shortly before losing his wicket on the fifth day of the first Test in Galle. Sri Lanka were chasing 372 for victory and needed to survive the final stages of the match to force a draw when Jaiswal attempted to persuade Dickwella to take on Prasidh Krishna’s short-pitched deliveries. Devdutt Padikkal has made a strong statement in his latest opportunity for India, but the left-hander knows that big scores alone may not guarantee him a permanent place in the Test XI. Padikkal scored an impressive 167 in the first innings and followed it with 44 in the second innings of the first Test against Sri Lanka. Despite his outstanding contribution, the Karnataka batter remains cautious about his long-term prospects, with Sai Sudharsan currently established as India’s preferred No. 3. Padikkal is expected to retain his place for the second Test, but he said he has not discussed his future role with either the selectors or the team management. “It’s important that whenever you get that opportunity, you have to just take it. Warwickshire all-rounder Keith Barker has announced his retirement from professional cricket with immediate effect at the age of 39, bringing an end to a career spanning more than 15 years. Barker returned to Warwickshire this season on a 12-month contract after spending the previous seven seasons with Hampshire. However, his comeback was disrupted by a knee injury, which restricted him to just two County Championship appearances. His final first-class appearance came in Warwickshire's drawn match against Yorkshire at Scarborough in June. Barker finishes his first-class career with an impressive record of 5,554 runs at an average of 28.33 and 544 wickets at 25.00 from 171 matches. He claimed 23 five-wicket hauls and scored six centuries. His best bowling figures in an innings were 7 for 46, recorded for Hampshire against Nottinghamshire in 2021. Earlier in his career, he produced match-winning figures of 11 for 70 against Durham in 2012, helping Warwickshire secure the County Championship title. A left-arm seamer and left-handed batter, Barker also made a significant contribution in limited-overs cricket, taking 158 wickets across List A and T20 cricket and scoring more than 1,000 runs in white-ball cricket. Before committing himself fully to cricket, Barker was also a talented footballer. He represented England at youth level up to Under-20s before choosing to pursue a career in cricket. Reflecting on his retirement, Barker said Warwickshire had always held a special place in his life. "It's difficult to put into words what Warwickshire means to me," Barker said. "I first came to the club in 2008 and spent ten years here, before seven brilliant seasons at Hampshire and then getting the opportunity to come back and finish my career where it all started." Barker also paid tribute to Hampshire, describing his time at the club as a major part of his career and saying it had given him lasting memories and friendships. "I always knew this day would come, but that doesn't make it any easier. In my head I still want to compete, still want the ball in my hand and still believe I can make a difference. Unfortunately, after a long career and plenty of injuries, my body is telling me it's time," he said. The all-rounder's career also included a difficult period in 2025, when he received a 12-month backdated suspension after testing positive for a prohibited substance during a routine drugs test. Warwickshire described the incident as an "administrative error", explaining that Barker had been prescribed a like-for-like alternative for a long-standing medical condition. The National Anti-Doping Panel concluded that he had not been seeking a competitive advantage. Barker acknowledged the support he received from the Professional Cricketers' Association (PCA), particularly during that period. "Their support has meant a huge amount to me and is something I'll always be grateful for," he said. After returning to the club where his professional journey began, Barker will now walk away from the game with a career defined by his contributions with both bat and ball, as well as his strong connection with Warwickshire and Hampshire. "To finish my career where it started, in a city that became my home and at a club that will always mean so much to me, feels incredibly special," Barker said. "I'm going to miss playing more than I can put into words, but I'll walk away proud, grateful and thankful to everyone who has been part of the journey."

Surrey have signed India batter Mahipal Lomror on a six-match deal for the remainder of the County Championship season, while Somerset have brought in New Zealand international Henry Nicholls to strengthen their batting for the final stages of the campaign. Lomror, 26, will join Surrey ahead of their home Championship fixture against Nottinghamshire on Thursday. The left-handed batter has played 63 first-class matches and averages 42.62, with 62 wickets to his name with left-arm orthodox spin. Surrey moved for Lomror after Will Jacks became unavailable due to an ankle injury and Dan Lawrence was recalled to England's Test squad for the upcoming series against Pakistan, beginning August 19. Surrey director of men's cricket Alec Stewart said Lomror's ability to contribute with both bat and ball made him an important addition to the squad. “With the loss of Lawrence and Jacks' ability to bowl spin, it was important to add a batter who can bowl some overs of spin when required for the final stage of the season,” Stewart said.
