Connolly’s Calm Debut Guides PBKS to Nerve-Wracking Win Over GT

Punjab Kings (PBKS) pulled off a tense chase against Gujarat Titans (GT), with debutant Cooper Connolly delivering a composed performance under pressure to seal victory with five balls to spare.

Chasing a modest target, PBKS began confidently as Prabhsimran Singh and Connolly launched an aggressive assault early on. However, the innings took a dramatic turn when Prasidh Krishna triggered a sudden collapse, leaving the hosts struggling at 121 for 6 after losing four wickets in quick succession.

Despite the wobble, Connolly held his nerve. The Australian all-rounder anchored the innings brilliantly, bringing up a crucial half-century and finding timely support from Marco Jansen and Xavier Bartlett. The trio ensured PBKS crossed the finish line in a match that swung both ways.

Earlier, GT endured a disappointing outing with the bat. Although Shubman Gill, Sai Sudharsan, and Jos Buttler got off to promising starts, none managed to convert them into significant scores. Buttler top-scored with 38, while Gill added 39, but the innings lacked momentum in the middle overs.

Yuzvendra Chahal was instrumental in restricting GT. The leg-spinner broke a key partnership by dismissing Gill and later removed Buttler, applying brakes on the scoring rate. Vijaykumar Vyshak also played a crucial role, particularly in the latter stages, picking up important wickets including Glenn Phillips, Washington Sundar, and Shahrukh Khan with clever variations.

GT’s innings started briskly, featuring nine boundaries in the powerplay, but slowed considerably as PBKS bowlers tightened their grip. The Titans ultimately posted a below-par total, further hurt by their inability to clear the ropes—managing just three sixes compared to PBKS’ 14.

In reply, PBKS displayed early dominance. Connolly and Prabhsimran took on the bowlers, with a flurry of sixes setting the tone. Even after Prabhsimran’s dismissal, captain Shreyas Iyer kept up the momentum before falling against the run of play, sparking a collapse.

With the match hanging in the balance, Connolly’s composure proved decisive. He attacked strategically, especially against Kagiso Rabada, and guided PBKS home with calculated aggression.

While PBKS will be pleased with the win, their bowling discipline remains a concern, conceding 14 extras, including 11 wides. GT, on the other hand, will rue missed opportunities with the bat and their inability to capitalize on strong starts.

In the end, it was Connolly’s cool-headed debut that made the difference in a thrilling contest.
