New South Wales allrounder Jack Edwards has been called up to Australia’s ODI squad for the upcoming three-match series against South Africa after Billy Stanlake was ruled out with injury. Harry Brook has challenged England to maintain their position at the top of the ICC T20I rankings after a dominant 3-0 series sweep over Sri Lanka. England sealed an eight-wicket victory in the third and final T20I at Emirates Old Trafford, completing a comprehensive series whitewash and reclaiming the No. 1 ranking from India. The result capped an impressive run for England, who have now won 23 of their last 26 completed T20 matches, including seven victories in succession. Their rise in the format began after Brook was appointed limited-overs captain at the start of last summer. England had previously climbed to the top of the rankings after a 4-0 T20I series victory over India earlier this summer, but India regained the position after beating Zimbabwe. England made their return to the summit in emphatic fashion against Sri Lanka. Chasing just 125 in the final match, they reached the target in only 9.4 overs, with Jos Buttler sealing victory with a six while remaining unbeaten on 62. Brook said England could be proud of their performance but stressed that the team must remain motivated to hold on to the No. 1 position."We've got to stay motivated to try and keep that spot for as long as possible." The England captain also acknowledged that maintaining the ranking could prove challenging because England play fewer T20 internationals than some of their rivals, particularly India. "We probably don't play as much T20 as other nations, especially India who play a hell of a lot of T20s. So keeping that might not be as easy as it sounds, but every opportunity we get, we're going to try and dominate in opposition," Brook said. Brook also praised England's fielding standards and the team's commitment to their plans. "Everything's running so smoothly, especially in the field. Lads are taking it upon themselves to make sure they're in the right spots and we're really nailing down and buying into everything that we're talking about in the outfield." The immediate future, however, will see England's focus shift away from T20 cricket. The next T20 World Cup is scheduled for 2028 in Australia and New Zealand, while England face a busy period across all three formats. New Test head coach Stephen Fleming was present at Old Trafford alongside white-ball coach Brendon McCullum. The pair have already begun discussing the demands placed on England's all-format players. Fleming's tenure will begin with a three-match Test series against South Africa, which overlaps with the latter stages of England's limited-overs tour of Australia. The Ashes next summer and the subsequent ODI World Cup will add further demands to the schedule. Brook, who is also England's Test vice-captain, could be among the players most affected by the competing demands. England's selectors had considered resting him for the Sri Lanka series before deciding to retain him following discussions with the 27-year-old. For now, Brook's attention remains on building England's winning culture in T20 cricket and ensuring their latest spell at the top of the rankings lasts as long as possible.
