Middlesex’s director of cricket, Alan Coleman, will step down from his role at the end of the 2026 season, bringing an end to his five-year tenure at the club. Coleman took charge in 2021 following Stuart Law’s departure as head coach. Before becoming director of cricket, he had worked with Middlesex as an assistant coach and academy director. During his time in the role, Coleman oversaw both the men’s and women’s senior teams. Among the key achievements of his tenure were the men’s return to Division One of the County Championship in 2022 and Sunrisers’ success in the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy in 2024. His decision comes during a challenging period for Middlesex away from the field. Former chief executive Andrew Cornish was dismissed in June after previously taking a leave of absence amid a Cricket Regulator investigation into his conduct. The club had also been placed under special measures by the ECB in September 2023 following breaches of the County Partnership Agreement and financial regulations. Coleman said he was proud to have led the cricket department at the club he had supported since childhood, particularly during what he described as one of the most difficult periods in Middlesex’s history off the field. He also paid tribute to the players, coaches and staff he worked with, including men’s head coaches Richard Johnson, Dane Vilas and Peter Fulton, women’s coaches Andy Tennant and Marc Broom, and Sunrisers regional director of cricket Danni Warren. Middlesex interim CEO Julie Harrington thanked Coleman for his contribution and praised his dedication to the club. She said his focus on developing and winning with homegrown players would remain an important part of Middlesex’s future. The club has already begun the process of finding Coleman’s successor. He will remain involved through the end of the calendar year, overseeing the beginning of the winter training programme and helping ensure a smooth transition to his replacement.

Former England batter Jonathan Trott has been appointed interim head coach of the England Lions for their upcoming two-match T20 series against Sri Lanka and is reportedly among the leading candidates to take the role on a permanent basis. Trott will take charge of the Lions after applying for the position advertised by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) last month. The vacancy opened following Andrew Flintoff’s resignation from the role after he was appointed head coach of Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash League. The 44-year-old Trott recently ended a highly successful four-year spell as head coach of Afghanistan, stepping down after the T20 World Cup in February. During his tenure, Afghanistan reached the semi-finals of the 2024 T20 World Cup and recorded notable victories over Sri Lanka, England and Pakistan at the 2023 ODI World Cup. Trott will lead the Lions in their two T20 matches against Sri Lanka on September 11 and 13. The games will serve as preparation for Sri Lanka ahead of their white-ball series against England, which includes three T20 internationals and three ODIs. He will be assisted by former England internationals Ravi Bopara and Graeme Swann, while ECB pace-bowling lead Troy Cooley and fielding specialist Carl Hopkinson will also be part of the coaching staff. Pakistan captain Fatima Sana has been fined 10% of her match fee and handed one demerit point for her send-off gesture towards India's Shafali Verma during the Women's T20 Asia Cup in Dubai. The incident occurred during the second over of India's chase after Pakistan had been bowled out for just 55 runs. Shafali attempted a shot back towards the bowler and Sana completed the catch before gesturing towards the pavilion during her celebration. The gesture attracted the attention of the match officials and resulted in Sana being charged with a breach of Article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Match Officials. The provision covers actions or gestures that disparage a dismissed batter or could provoke an aggressive reaction. Sana admitted to the offence during her meeting with match referee Supriya Rani Das, meaning a formal hearing was not required. The penalty is particularly significant because it was Sana's second offence within a 24-month period. Her latest demerit point takes her disciplinary tally to two. Marnus Labuschagne has retained his place in Australia’s Test squad for the upcoming three-match series in South Africa, despite mounting pressure over his prolonged run of poor form. Australia have named a 16-man squad for the tour, with Cooper Connolly, Michael Neser and Matthew Kuhnemann added to the group that featured in the second Test against Bangladesh in Mackay. Labuschagne remains Australia’s preferred No. 3 despite averaging just 24.69 across his last 43 Test innings without scoring a century since July 2023. His latest Test scores against Bangladesh — 1, 31 and 4 — further intensified questions over his position. The batter has also been left out of Australia’s ODI squads for the tours of Zimbabwe and South Africa, meaning he will be able to focus exclusively on red-ball preparation ahead of the Test series. Selectors Back Labuschagne Australia chair of selectors George Bailey acknowledged that Labuschagne needs to produce more runs but said the selectors remain confident in his ability to contribute. “We’re not shying away from the fact that we’d like some more runs from Marn,” Bailey said. “But we’re also confident that he can still make a positive contribution to that squad.” Bailey suggested that Labuschagne’s absence from the preceding one-day matches could benefit him by allowing him to concentrate entirely on Test cricket. The South Africa series could therefore represent an important opportunity for Labuschagne to rebuild his form and secure his long-term position in Australia’s Test middle order. Connolly Earns Test Squad Call-Up Young allrounder Cooper Connolly is the other batter added to the squad. Connolly does not yet have a first-class century and has limited experience batting in the top order, having batted at No. 3 and No. 4 only once each in his 21 first-class innings. However, his impressive progress across formats has caught the selectors’ attention. He scored a stunning ODI century against Bangladesh in June after opening the innings. Bailey believes Connolly has the ability to develop into a top-three Test batter. “He's a good player, and one I think that's going to continue to develop across formats,” Bailey said. “His ability to bat in a range of positions will continue to grow as he gets more and more experience.” Josh Inglis has also been included as a reserve batter and wicketkeeper, with Bailey confident that he could also fill a top-three role if required. Head-Smith Batting Order Remains Under Discussion Australia could also consider changes to the top order during the South Africa tour. Travis Head and Matthew Renshaw are currently the only specialist openers in the squad, with Renshaw retaining his place after replacing Jake Weatherald during the Bangladesh series. However, selectors could consider moving Head back to No. 5 and promoting Steve Smith to No. 3, a position Smith occupied successfully for much of his career. Bailey said both possibilities remained open, while acknowledging that changing the batting order could affect the balance of the side. “Any time you do make a move, it’s what are you taking away from where they are performing,” Bailey said. Guyana Amazon Warriors continued their unbeaten run in the CPL 2026, recording their sixth consecutive victory with a comfortable seven-wicket win over St Kitts and Nevis Patriots at Providence. Mohammad Nabi delivered an all-round performance to lead the Warriors to another dominant victory. Nabi claimed four wickets for 17 runs and later contributed an unbeaten 25 with the bat as Guyana chased down a modest target of 129 with nine balls to spare. The victory was the Warriors’ second straight win since the CPL caravan moved to Providence and strengthened their position at the top of the points table. Nabi, Bowlers Tear Through Patriots After winning the toss, St Kitts and Nevis Patriots captain Jason Holder elected to bat, and his side initially appeared set for a competitive total. Johnson Charles and Kyle Mayers put together a brisk opening partnership worth 34 runs in less than four overs. However, the Patriots quickly lost momentum, slipping to 39 for three during the powerplay. Alick Athanaze provided the main resistance, scoring a patient 52 from 39 deliveries. But the Warriors' bowlers kept taking wickets at regular intervals. Gurbaz was eventually dismissed in the sixth over, but the damage had already been done. Mavendra Dindyal struggled to find his rhythm and made 17 from 16 balls before Navin Bidaisee dismissed him. However, the young batter's innings ended when he attempted to attack a short delivery from CV Milind, picking out deep midwicket.
