Dunkley Century Powers England to 3-0 ODI Series Sweep Over Ireland

Sophia Dunkley’s international career-best century laid the foundation for England as they completed a convincing 3-0 ODI series sweep over Ireland in Worcester.

Dunkley struck a composed 119 from 119 balls — her second century in ODI cricket — to put England in a commanding position. Despite a late collapse, England posted 291 before being bowled out with seven balls remaining.

Ireland’s Cara Murray was the standout bowler, claiming four wickets for 56 runs. Her late spell triggered England’s collapse from 260 for four, as the hosts lost their final six wickets for just 31 runs.

England, however, proved far too strong with the ball. Ireland struggled to build momentum in their chase and were eventually dismissed for 176, falling 115 runs short of their target with 5.4 overs still remaining.

Lauren Filer and Mady Villiers shared six wickets between them. Filer returned to the England side with Issy Wong rested after her five-wicket haul in the previous game and made an immediate impact, dismissing Ireland captain Gaby Lewis cheaply before finishing with three for 27.

Villiers also claimed three wickets for 33 runs, including the important dismissals of Amy Hunter and Orla Prendergast.

Dunkley Anchors England’s Innings

England made a steady start after opening pair Sophia Dunkley and Maia Bouchier were initially restricted by Arlene Kelly and Prendergast.

Bouchier eventually broke the shackles, hitting three boundaries in five balls from Prendergast before Dunkley followed with two fours in three deliveries. England reached 61 without loss after 10 overs.

Bouchier departed for 39 from 35 balls in the 12th over, caught at cover off Kia McCartney, but Dunkley continued to control the innings.

She then dominated a 110-run partnership with Jodi Grewcock. Dunkley moved to 99 by pulling a short delivery from Louise Little behind square before completing her century with a single down the ground.

Her innings eventually ended on 119 when she picked out Prendergast at deep midwicket off Lara McBride, but by then she had provided England with the platform for a substantial total.

Ireland Collapse Under Pressure

England’s middle order added useful runs, with Dani Gibson and Freya Kemp putting together a 46-run partnership. However, Ireland fought back strongly through Murray, who played a major role in England’s late collapse.

Kemp was caught by Lewis near the boundary, while Charlie Dean and Villiers also fell in quick succession. Ryana MacDonald-Gay was dismissed by a catch from Murray, and Gibson was later run out for 42.

Filer’s dismissal in the final stages left England all out for 291.

Ireland’s chase never truly threatened the target. Lewis fell early for 16, and although Hunter and Alice Tector added 56 for the second wicket, England’s bowlers gradually tightened their grip.

Tector was bowled by Tilly Corteen-Coleman, whose arm ball ripped out the off stump. Villiers then dismissed Hunter after she advanced down the pitch and missed an attempted big shot, with wicketkeeper Alice Capsey completing the stumping.

Capsey was again involved behind the stumps when Rebecca Stokell was caught short of her crease.

Villiers removed Prendergast soon afterwards, and Ireland’s lower order offered little resistance. Filer completed the victory by bowling Kia McCartney with a pinpoint yorker.

England Finish Summer on a High

The emphatic victory gave England a 3-0 series win and brought their busy home international summer to a successful conclusion.

Dunkley’s century was the defining moment of the match, while England’s disciplined bowling ensured Ireland never came close to chasing down their target.
