Nigeria Edge Zimbabwe in Thriller to Qualify for Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup

Nigeria secured their place in next year’s Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup after edging Zimbabwe by four runs in a dramatic final of the Africa Qualifier in Dar es Salaam.

Nigeria successfully defended a modest total of 98 to complete an unbeaten campaign and claim the African qualifying spot for the global tournament, which will be hosted by Bangladesh and Nepal next year. South Africa have already secured the other African qualification spot.

The victory marked another significant milestone for Nigerian women’s cricket, with the team showing composure under pressure to hold off Zimbabwe in a tense finish.

Nigeria Defend 98 in Dramatic Final

After being asked to bat, Nigeria struggled to build a big total but captain Christabel Chukwuonye played an important role with a top score of 21 from No. 6.

Nigeria finished on 98 for six, with three run-outs contributing to their relatively modest total.

Zimbabwe appeared to have a realistic chance of completing the chase, but Nigeria's bowlers produced a disciplined performance when it mattered most.

Usen Peace was the standout performer, dismantling Zimbabwe's top order almost single-handedly and putting the chase under immediate pressure.

Her teammates then maintained the pressure, taking wickets at regular intervals as Zimbabwe were eventually bowled out for 94 with one ball remaining.

Chukwuonye Hails Team’s Composure

Seventeen-year-old captain Christabel Chukwuonye, who has already represented Nigeria in 40 T20 internationals, praised her teammates and coaching staff after the memorable victory.

“I actually cried when the game was over because I couldn’t really express what I was feeling,” Chukwuonye said.

She acknowledged that the World Cup would present a much greater challenge but insisted that Nigeria's qualification was only the beginning.

“The next phase is just the beginning and we know it will be tougher. My team has really been the best,” she said.

Chukwuonye also credited the team's unity and ability to remain calm during the tense final over.

“They listened to the coaches, stayed united, and, even with the pressure in the last over, they were able to hold their nerves,” she added.

Nigeria Return to World Cup

The qualification means Nigeria will make their second appearance at the Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup.

They also qualified for the inaugural edition in 2025, where they won two of their three completed matches, with two additional games abandoned due to rain.

Their standout performance came against New Zealand, whom Nigeria defeated after successfully defending just 65 in a rain-affected contest.

Nigeria will now join the world’s leading youth teams at next year’s tournament, having secured qualification alongside regional winners from other parts of the world.

USA qualified through the Americas pathway, Samoa through the East Asia-Pacific region and UAE through the Asian qualification route.

With an unbeaten qualifying campaign behind them, Nigeria will now turn their attention to the global stage, where they will aim to build on their impressive showing in the previous edition.
