About

Born in Aberdeen, Michael Alexander Leask has earned a reputation as one of Scotland’s most explosive white-ball cricketers. A hard-hitting right-handed batsman and handy off-break bowler, Leask is best known for his ability to clear the ropes with ease and shift the momentum of a game in a matter of deliveries.

Leask's rise through the ranks was steady and consistent, having represented Scotland at Under-13, Under-15, Under-17, and Under-19 levels before making the leap to the senior national team. He made his T20I debut in July 2013 against Kenya, and it didn’t take long for him to make his mark. In just his third T20I appearance, he smashed a belligerent 58 and stitched together a century partnership with Matt Machan against the Netherlands in November 2013 — a knock that, although in a losing cause, showcased his potential.

His ODI debut came in January 2014 against Canada, but it was a few months later that Leask truly hit the headlines. In a high-profile ODI against England in May 2014, he hammered a breathtaking 42 off just 16 balls, catching the attention of then-England captain Alastair Cook, who publicly praised the knock. However, that performance turned out to be a false dawn, as Leask struggled during the 2014 World Cup Qualifiers, managing only 56 runs at an average of 9.33.

Despite the dip in form, Leask was retained in Scotland’s 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup squad, though his impact on the tournament was minimal as Scotland failed to progress to the knockout stage.

Leask has also made contributions with the ball. One of his more notable moments came during Scotland's 2014 World Cup acclimatisation tour, where his off-spin claimed three wickets in a victory over Tasmania. That same year, he featured in a first-class match for Northamptonshire against New Zealand A, before moving to Somerset in 2016, where Director of Cricket Matt Maynard described him as a "feisty cricketer."

He made his first-class debut for Scotland in the ICC Intercontinental Cup in October 2017, further expanding his role as an all-rounder. In Scotland’s historic ODI win over England in 2018, Leask had a mixed outing — conceding 50 runs in just four overs but contributing a brief 10 off 4 balls with the bat.

While inconsistency has occasionally limited his impact, Leask remains a game-changer on his day, capable of turning matches with either bat or ball. With experience across formats and continued involvement in the county circuit, he continues to be a key member of Scotland's limited-overs setup.
