Albie Morkel Appointed Head Coach of Joburg Super Kings Ahead of SA20 2027
Johannesburg: Former South Africa all-rounder Albie Morkel has been appointed as the new head coach of the Joburg Super Kings (JSK) ahead of the fifth season of the SA20 league in 2027. He succeeds long-serving coach Stephen Fleming, who stepped down from the role earlier this month.
Morkel has been part of the Joburg Super Kings setup since the franchise's inception, serving in the coaching staff and playing a key role in developing emerging talent, including South African batter Donovan Ferreira. A former Chennai Super Kings star in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Morkel has deep ties with the Super Kings franchise and was also South Africa's T20 consultant during the ICC Men's T20 World Cup earlier this year.
Expressing his excitement over the appointment, Morkel said it was a proud milestone in his cricket journey.
"It is an incredible honour to be appointed Head Coach of the Joburg Super Kings. From wearing the Super Kings jersey as a player to now leading one of its franchises as Head Coach, this journey is truly special. I look forward to building on the strong foundations we've created together and helping this group achieve its full potential," Morkel said.
Joburg Super Kings have consistently been among the top-performing teams in the SA20, reaching the semi-finals in the inaugural 2023 season and again in 2024. The franchise exited in the Eliminator stage in both the 2025 and 2026 editions and will now aim to go one step further under Morkel's leadership.
JSK director Kasi Viswanathan welcomed the appointment, highlighting Morkel's familiarity with the franchise's culture and his understanding of South African cricket.
"Albie Morkel understands our culture well, having experienced it both as a player and as a coach. His leadership and understanding of the South African cricket landscape gives us great confidence as we move forward," Viswanathan said.
The fifth edition of the SA20 is scheduled to begin on January 17, 2027, with the Joburg Super Kings set to open their campaign against the Paarl Royals on January 18.
