About
Lungi Ngidi, alongside Kagiso Rabada, forms the backbone of South Africa national cricket team’s formidable pace attack. Standing at 1.93 meters, Ngidi combines raw pace—often exceeding 140 kph—with the ability to seam the ball both ways. His heavy-ball approach, sharp bouncers, and open-chested action make him a constant threat to batters.
Ngidi made a dream Test debut against India national cricket team at Centurion in January 2018, stepping in for Dale Steyn. He announced himself in style with a six-wicket haul, playing a crucial role in South Africa’s victory. One standout moment saw him cleverly dismiss Virat Kohli, setting him up with deliveries outside off before trapping him lbw—highlighting both skill and tactical awareness.
Before his Test success, Ngidi had already impressed in T20Is, making his debut against Sri Lanka national cricket team in 2017, where he earned Player of the Match for figures of 2/12. Although he faced an early setback with injury that ruled him out of an ODI series, he soon established himself in the format.
Despite a modest ODI debut against India, Ngidi grew into a key limited-overs bowler. His maiden five-wicket haul came against Australia national cricket team in 2020, and he became the fastest South African to reach 50 ODI wickets (in just 26 matches).
However, injuries have frequently interrupted his progress. He missed the 2019 Cricket World Cup due to fitness issues and has often been in and out of the side. In the IPL, Ngidi made an immediate impact with Chennai Super Kings in 2018, helping them secure the title. Subsequent seasons, though, were hampered by recurring injuries, limiting his appearances.
In 2022, he was picked up by Delhi Capitals, adding experience to their pace attack. While he didn’t feature in the 2021 ICC Men's T20 World Cup, the 2022 edition proved more fruitful. Ngidi claimed seven wickets, including a memorable four-wicket haul against India, following a strong lead-up that included a five-wicket haul against England national cricket team.
Despite his injury concerns, Ngidi remains a vital component of South Africa’s bowling arsenal, with his partnership with Rabada continuing to shape the team’s fortunes on the global stage.
