About
A tall, elegant left-hander with a commanding presence at the crease, Devdutt Padikkal’s cricketing journey has been anything but ordinary. Standing at 6’3”, Padikkal blends class with composure, and after years of climbing the ranks, he is now carving out a place for himself in Indian cricket — most recently making his Test debut in early 2024.
Born in Edappal, Kerala, Padikkal’s family moved first to Hyderabad and later settled in Bengaluru in search of better opportunities for his budding cricket career. It was in the cricketing nurseries of Karnataka that his potential began to bloom. Picking up the sport at the age of 11, Padikkal swiftly rose through the ranks of school and age-group cricket.
He first captured attention with a blistering 53-ball 72 for Ballari Tuskers in the Karnataka Premier League in 2017. From there, he dominated the under-19 circuit for Karnataka, and after overcoming a brief slump in form and confidence, he rebounded spectacularly — amassing 829 runs in the 2018 Cooch Behar Trophy and finishing as the fourth-highest run-scorer in the tournament.
His prolific run earned him the Best Batsman Award from the Karnataka State Cricket Association and a place in the senior squad for the Vijay Hazare Trophy. His consistent performances soon led to an India U-19 call-up for the tour of Sri Lanka, where he impressed further.
In 2019, at just 19 years of age, Padikkal was signed by Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the Indian Premier League. While he didn’t get a chance to debut that year, being part of the dressing room alongside some of the game’s legends proved invaluable.
