SRH Pull Off Record Chase Despite Rickelton’s Heroics as MI Suffer Another Defeat

In a high-scoring thriller at the Wankhede Stadium, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) chased down a daunting target of 244 to defeat Mumbai Indians (MI) by six wickets, registering their fifth consecutive win of the IPL 2026 season. The match turned into a batting spectacle, overshadowing a historic knock by MI opener Ryan Rickelton.

Rickelton produced one of the finest innings in IPL history, remaining unbeaten on 123 off just 55 deliveries — the highest score ever by a Mumbai Indians batter in the tournament. His explosive knock powered MI to a formidable 243 for 5, their highest-ever first-innings total. However, SRH’s relentless batting lineup made light work of the chase, reaching the target with eight balls to spare.

Opting to bat first at Wankhede for the first time in 22 matches, MI finally found success at the top of the order. Rickelton and Will Jacks stitched together a brisk opening stand, guiding the team to 78 runs in the powerplay. Jacks contributed a quickfire 38 off 18 before being dismissed by Nitish Kumar Reddy.

Rickelton continued his assault, reaching his half-century in just 23 balls and later bringing up his maiden IPL hundred in only 44 deliveries — the fastest by a Mumbai Indians batter. He found support from Hardik Pandya as MI surged past 200 in the 16th over. However, SRH bowlers, led by Eshan Malinga and Pat Cummins, staged a late comeback, restricting MI to just 41 runs in the final four overs.

In response, SRH openers Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head launched a brutal counterattack. The pair added 129 runs for the first wicket, with a staggering 92 coming in the powerplay. Head raced to a 20-ball fifty, while Abhishek matched him stroke for stroke as MI’s bowlers struggled, even under the leadership of Jasprit Bumrah.

Despite a brief collapse that saw SRH lose three wickets in quick succession, Heinrich Klaasen ensured there were no further hiccups. The South African wicketkeeper-batter smashed an unbeaten 65 off 30 balls, dismantling the MI bowling attack with ease. He was ably supported by Salil Arora, who contributed a rapid 30 not out off just 10 deliveries, sealing the chase in emphatic fashion.

The victory marked one of the highest successful run chases in IPL history and the highest ever at Wankhede Stadium. For Mumbai Indians, it was their fourth defeat at home this season, leaving them languishing in ninth place on the points table. Meanwhile, SRH climbed to third, continuing their impressive run in the tournament.

The match once again highlighted the dominance of bat over ball in IPL 2026, with bowlers finding little assistance on a dew-laden pitch as two power-packed batting lineups went head-to-head in a memorable contest.
