Rickelton’s Blazing Century Not Enough as MI Fall Despite Strong Start

Mumbai Indians (MI) continued their disappointing IPL 2026 campaign, going down to Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) despite a sensational unbeaten century from Ryan Rickelton on Wednesday night.

Rickelton produced a stunning 123 not out off 55 balls, anchoring MI to a formidable total of 243. However, his efforts went in vain as SRH chased down the target, marking another instance this season where a century has come in a losing cause.

The South African opener has endured an inconsistent run this season, with a mix of low scores and impactful knocks. Alongside three single-digit dismissals, Rickelton has also registered scores of 81, 37, and now 123*, highlighting both his potential and the uncertainty surrounding his place in the XI. Competition from players like Quinton de Kock and Will Jacks has added to that uncertainty.

Former India cricketer Saba Karim, speaking on ESPNcricinfo’s TimeOut show, acknowledged the challenges faced by overseas batters in such situations. He praised Rickelton’s resilience, noting his ability to return strongly despite being in and out of the side.

MI’s opening combination clicked well in this match, with Will Jacks—playing his first game of the season—scoring a quickfire 46 off 22 balls. The duo added 93 runs in just 43 balls, powering MI to 78 without loss in the powerplay. However, their effort was overshadowed by SRH’s even more explosive start of 92 for no loss.

Rickelton’s innings stood out not only for its volume of runs but also for its consistency in scoring rate. He reached his half-century in just 23 balls and his century in 44 balls, maintaining momentum throughout. His ability to counter both pace and spin was evident, particularly during the middle overs when MI lost wickets at the other end.

Apart from Rickelton and Jacks, only Hardik Pandya made a notable contribution with a brisk 31 off 15 balls. The lack of support from the rest of the batting lineup once again exposed MI’s fragility this season.

This innings adds Rickelton to a growing list of players who have scored centuries in IPL 2026 but ended up on the losing side—a list that includes Quinton de Kock, KL Rahul, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, and B Sai Sudarshan.

Despite MI’s struggles, Rickelton has emerged as their leading run-scorer this season, amassing 260 runs at an impressive strike rate of 181.81. His performances may have finally cemented his place in the playing XI for the remainder of the tournament.

While MI’s campaign continues to falter, Rickelton’s form offers a rare bright spot in an otherwise underwhelming season.
