Rohit Sharma Shines on Return, but MI Face Uphill Battle for Playoffs
Rohit Sharma marked his return to the Mumbai Indians (MI) lineup with a commanding performance, but questions remain whether his resurgence has come too late to revive the team’s faltering Indian Premier League 2026 campaign.
After missing five matches due to a hamstring injury, Rohit made an immediate impact, scoring a fluent 84 off 44 balls against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). His innings, studded with seven sixes, set the tone for MI’s batting alongside Ryan Rickelton, who smashed 83 off just 32 deliveries. The pair stitched together a 143-run opening stand in under 11 overs.
Power-Hitting Approach on Full Display
Rohit’s aggressive intent was evident early, as he took on bowlers like Mohammed Shami and Avesh Khan in the powerplay. He also attacked spin effectively, hitting two sixes off M Siddharth.
Former India all-rounder Sanjay Bangar praised Rohit’s evolving approach, noting the increasing importance of explosive starts in modern T20 cricket.
“Teams now want openers who can hit sixes inside the first six overs. That style of batting is setting up wins more consistently,” Bangar observed.
MI’s Balance Issues Without Rohit
Rohit’s absence exposed structural issues within MI’s lineup, particularly in balancing overseas and Indian players. The team struggled to field an optimal combination, often compromising either batting depth or bowling strength.
With overseas openers like Quinton de Kock and Rickelton available, MI found it difficult to play both simultaneously due to the need for additional overseas bowlers such as Trent Boult. This led to frequent changes, with players like Danish Malewar filling in but lacking the experience Rohit brings at the top.
Veda Krishnamurthy highlighted the impact of this imbalance, pointing out that MI lacked a like-for-like Indian replacement for Rohit during his absence.
Too Little, Too Late?
Despite Rohit’s brilliance, MI’s position remains precarious. The team sits ninth on the table and has struggled for consistency throughout the season. Notably, two of their three wins have come when Rohit delivered significant contributions, including a 78 against the Kolkata Knight Riders.
While his return strengthens the batting unit, Rohit alone may not be enough to turn the tide. MI will need a collective improvement across departments if they are to mount a late push for the playoffs.
For now, Rohit’s form offers a glimmer of hope — but with limited matches remaining, Mumbai Indians are running out of time to translate individual brilliance into a sustained comeback.
