SRH’s Complacency Costs Them Top Spot Chance as KKR Cruise to Victory
Sunrisers Hyderabad’s impressive five-match winning streak came to a halt on Sunday as Kolkata Knight Riders secured a comfortable seven-wicket win in their IPL 2026 clash, exposing what critics described as complacency within the SRH camp.
Former India cricketer Ambati Rayudu did not hold back in his assessment, suggesting SRH’s approach lacked preparation and intent despite their strong run of form.
“They actually looked like a team after five wins because they have been complacent—proper complacency,” Rayudu said during ESPNcricinfo’s TimeOut show. “They thought they could get away with no planning, assuming everything would just work for them.”
Rayudu also questioned SRH’s decision-making after they opted to bat first on a surface that historically becomes easier for chasing later in the day.
“In an afternoon game in Hyderabad, the pitch tends to be slow early on. It was poor planning—they should have known better,” he added.
SRH posted 165 after a promising start of 71 for 1 in the powerplay but failed to capitalize. Key wickets at crucial moments derailed their innings, with Varun Chakravarthy (3/36), Sunil Narine (2/31), and Kartik Tyagi (2/30) leading KKR’s disciplined bowling effort.
SRH head coach Daniel Vettori attributed the loss to poorly timed dismissals.
“We got off to a great start but couldn’t build on it. Losing wickets at key moments hurt us,” Vettori said. “Even though the pitch was a bit slow, 165 was always going to be difficult to defend.”
The dismissals of Travis Head, Ishan Kishan, and Heinrich Klaasen proved pivotal, halting momentum just as SRH looked set for a bigger total.
Despite strong contributions from Head (61 off 28) and Kishan (42 off 29), the rest of the batting lineup faltered, with no other batter reaching double figures until captain Pat Cummins chipped in with 10 from No. 8.
Former New Zealand cricketer Katey Martin offered a more measured perspective, pointing to a lack of adaptability rather than outright complacency.
“They’ve relied heavily on their top order, and when that doesn’t fully fire, they struggle,” Martin said. “Perhaps they needed a bit more thought in how they approached the innings.”
The defeat denied SRH the opportunity to climb to the top of the table, especially after Punjab Kings lost later in the day. Despite remaining third, the result serves as a timely warning.
As Martin noted, “Sometimes you need a performance like this to reset and refocus.”
For SRH, the challenge now will be to quickly regroup and ensure that early-season success does not turn into late-season regret.
