Maxwell Open to Victoria Return Despite ODI Retirement; Short Commits Without State Deal

Glenn Maxwell remains open to playing domestic 50-over cricket for Victoria cricket team despite having retired from ODIs and not holding a state or Cricket Australia (CA) contract.

Maxwell, who stepped away from international one-day cricket after the 2025 Champions Trophy, has reportedly held informal discussions with Victoria about featuring in the One-Day Cup when his schedule permits. Although now primarily a T20 specialist, the 37-year-old has shown willingness to contribute to state cricket on a flexible basis.

He had already demonstrated this approach last year, playing two One-Day Cup matches for Victoria and scoring his maiden List A century for the side against Queensland. Those appearances also served as preparation for an international T20 tour.

Franchise Commitments Reshaping State Cricket

Maxwell’s situation reflects a broader trend in Australian cricket, where experienced white-ball players are opting out of full state contracts to maintain flexibility for global franchise leagues. Without a state deal, players can avoid restrictions such as requiring No Objection Certificates (NOCs) to participate in overseas tournaments.

Despite not being centrally contracted, Maxwell is keen to continue representing Australia in T20 internationals, even as he approaches the latter stages of his career.

Matthew Short to Continue Victoria Role

Meanwhile, Matthew Short will also remain available for Victoria despite not signing a state contract and now living in Queensland.

The 30-year-old all-rounder, who recently lost his CA contract after missing out on Australia’s T20 World Cup squad, has committed to playing both Sheffield Shield and One-Day Cup matches for Victoria when available. His decision allows him greater freedom to participate in overseas leagues, including the ILT20, without administrative hurdles.

Short had an active domestic season, featuring in four Sheffield Shield matches and five One-Day Cup games, although he missed the Shield final due to his IPL stint with the Chennai Super Kings.

Victoria Squad Updates

Victoria’s 2026–27 squad list saw minimal surprises. Promising players Fergus O’Neill and Campbell Kellaway were retained, while fast bowler Xavier Crone and spinner Callum Stow missed out on contracts but will stay connected to the program. Wicketkeeper Jai Lemire has moved interstate in search of greater opportunities.

At the development level, Australia Under-19 representatives Tom Paddington and Aryan Sharma have been added to the rookie list, signaling continued investment in emerging talent.

As player priorities evolve with the growing influence of franchise cricket, Victoria’s flexible approach highlights a shifting landscape in domestic cricket structures.
