Finn Allen Turns IPL 2026 Around After Tough Start, Powers KKR Revival

Finn Allen has emerged as one of the standout performers of IPL 2026 after overcoming a difficult start to the season with Kolkata Knight Riders. The explosive opener admitted that being dropped from the playing XI helped him regain perspective and rediscover his natural game.

Allen played a match-winning knock of 93 off just 35 balls against Gujarat Titans on Saturday, days after smashing an unbeaten 100 off 47 deliveries against Delhi Capitals. His latest innings kept KKR alive in the playoff race and reinforced his reputation as one of the most dangerous T20 batters in world cricket.

The New Zealand batter revealed that the pressure he placed on himself earlier in the tournament had affected both his performances and enjoyment of the game.

“I was probably a shell of a human for a bit there. And it was all self-inflicted,” Allen said after the win over GT.

Allen had managed only 81 runs in his first five innings in April before being dropped from the side. However, the break appears to have transformed his approach. Since returning, he has scored 29, 100 not out, 18 and 93 in four innings.

Reflecting on his time out of the team, Allen said the break allowed him to reset mentally.

“When you go out of the side, you have time to relax and look at things from a different perspective. I love batting, and I probably wasn’t enjoying it as much as I should have because I was putting so much pressure on myself.”

Former India batter Ambati Rayudu praised Allen’s aggressive approach against GT’s highly rated pace attack during ESPNcricinfo’s TimeOut show. According to Rayudu, Allen successfully countered the short-of-length bowling strategy employed by GT’s fast bowlers.

Rayudu highlighted Allen’s six over midwicket off Kagiso Rabada as a defining moment in the innings.

“Once you put away the ball for a six against somebody’s strength, the bowler is always struggling. He met fire with fire and succeeded,” Rayudu said.

Allen explained that his batting plan was straightforward — attack whenever possible and rotate strike when the big shot was unavailable.

“If it’s there, try and hit it for four or six. If it’s not, just try and get off strike,” he said.

The batter also impressed against spin, particularly during an explosive over against Rashid Khan, where he struck two sixes and a four in the space of three balls. He later launched R Sai Kishore for another six before eventually being dismissed.

Former India batting coach Sanjay Bangar noted significant improvement in Allen’s game against spin bowling compared to earlier stages of his career.

Bangar, who had previously worked with Allen at Royal Challengers Bengaluru, said the batter had evolved from being predominantly leg-side oriented into a player capable of scoring all around the wicket.

“He is now scoring literally all sides of the pitch and that’s a great advantage to have because then the bowler suddenly thinks where do you bowl,” Bangar observed.

Allen’s resurgence comes after his stunning unbeaten century in the T20 World Cup semi-final against South Africa national cricket team earlier this year at Eden Gardens, a venue that is quickly becoming synonymous with some of the best performances of his career.
