Born in Sialkot, Pakistan, Sikandar Raza's early dream was to become a fighter pilot, a goal he pursued earnestly until an eye examination dashed his hopes. Undeterred, Raza pivoted towards academics and enrolled at Glasgow Caledonian University in Scotland. His parents had settled in Zimbabwe in 2002, and Raza eventually joined them, where he found a new calling in cricket.

Starting as a semi-professional, he made his First-Class debut in 2007 for the Northerns. After Zimbabwe revamped its domestic structure, he represented the Mashonaland Eagles and returned to full-time cricket in the 2010-11 season, where he impressed with 625 runs at an average of 41. Raza emerged as a T20 specialist, topping the run charts in the 2010 Stanbic Bank 20 competition.

His consistent performances earned him a shot at national recognition, and after gaining Zimbabwean citizenship in late 2011, Raza made his ODI debut in May 2013 against Bangladesh. Although his debut was modest, he scored a notable 82 against India in just his fourth match. Later that year, he made his Test debut—facing his birth country, Pakistan—and scored a fifty in his first innings.

Raza's international career steadily progressed, highlighted by strong performances during Zimbabwe’s 2014 tour of Bangladesh, and his inclusion in the 2015 World Cup squad. A defining moment came in 2017, when he played a pivotal role in Zimbabwe’s historic ODI series win over Sri Lanka, and soon after, struck his maiden Test century (127) in the one-off Test against them.

In the 2019 World Cup Qualifiers, Raza was named Player of the Tournament, scoring 319 runs and taking 15 wickets. Despite his efforts, Zimbabwe failed to qualify, and Raza was controversially dropped amid a major shake-up by the board.

Tragedy struck again in 2021, when a bone marrow infection, initially feared to be cancer, sidelined him for months. Raza made a full recovery and returned stronger, winning Man of the Series in a home series against Bangladesh. His resurgence continued as he led Zimbabwe to qualification for the 2022 T20 World Cup, where he was instrumental in their campaign—including a famous win over Pakistan.

Raza reinvented himself as a full-fledged all-rounder, adding a carrom ball to his bowling arsenal and delivering in high-pressure death overs. His all-round brilliance attracted global franchise interest—he was picked by Dubai Capitals (ILT20), played a key role in Lahore Qalandars’ PSL 2023 title, and joined Punjab Kings in IPL 2023, making valuable contributions.

A player for the big stage, Raza remains Zimbabwe’s talisman. Heading into the 2023 ODI World Cup Qualifiers, he was at the peak of his powers—ready, once again, to carry the hopes of a cricketing nation.
