About

A powerfully built, hard-hitting right-hander from Queensland, Chris Lynn has long been regarded as one of the most destructive batters in Australian domestic cricket. Renowned for his ability to take on the best bowlers, Lynn also possesses the adaptability required to succeed across formats.

Like many modern cricketers, Lynn began his domestic journey in T20 cricket, making his debut for Queensland against New South Wales at just 19. Within the space of two months, he progressed through List A cricket and into the first-class arena. While his early appearances were modest, Lynn gradually found his rhythm, registering big scores across formats. A match-saving century for Queensland highlighted his versatility and helped cement his place in the Sheffield Shield side. With averages of over 40 in first-class cricket, more than 30 in List A matches and close to 30 in T20s, he emerged as a strong contender for higher honours.

His performances earned him an Australia call-up for the home T20I series against England in January 2014. Lynn made an immediate impact, blasting a typically aggressive 33 off just 19 balls on debut. However, his international ambitions were repeatedly disrupted by injury, most notably shoulder problems that forced him to miss consecutive Matador One-Day Cup tournaments and parts of two Sheffield Shield seasons. When fit, though, he made his presence felt, most memorably with a career-best 250 against Victoria in the 2014–15 Shield season following his return from injury.

Lynn’s reputation as a T20 powerhouse was forged in the Big Bash League with the Brisbane Heat, who signed him for the inaugural season in 2011. He quickly became a household name and one of the competition’s standout performers. He was named Player of the Tournament twice and produced some remarkable seasons, including 2016–17 when he scored 309 runs while being dismissed just twice, averaging 154.50 at a strike-rate of 177.59. The previous season saw him top the run charts with 378 runs at an average of 54 and a strike-rate of 173. He holds the record for the most sixes in BBL history and remains Brisbane Heat’s leading run-scorer, ranking third overall in the league. Among his many highlights was an unforgettable over in which he struck five sixes off Australian Test bowler Ben Hilfenhaus.

Despite his dominance in the BBL, Lynn’s career trajectory was affected by fitness concerns. He featured briefly in the 2018 Caribbean Premier League but returned to Australia mid-tournament to focus on his batting in pursuit of a place in the 2019 World Cup squad, a goal that ultimately proved elusive. His form dipped significantly in the 2021–22 BBL season, where he averaged just 17.91, prompting Brisbane Heat to release their former star. He subsequently joined the Adelaide Strikers.

In the Indian Premier League, Lynn’s journey began with the Deccan Chargers before a move to Sunrisers Hyderabad. He later joined the Kolkata Knight Riders after being bought for INR 1.3 crore in the 2014 auction. Lynn made an immediate impact for KKR, taking a spectacular catch to dismiss AB de Villiers and scoring a rapid 45 to earn the Player of the Match award. Injuries restricted his availability in subsequent seasons, but he enjoyed a strong 2017 campaign, scoring 295 runs from seven matches, including three half-centuries and a best of 93 not out against Gujarat Lions. That season also featured a record-breaking 106-run opening stand off just 36 balls with Sunil Narine.

The 2018 season was the only IPL campaign in which Lynn played all matches for KKR, finishing with 491 runs from 16 games at a strike-rate of 130.24 and earning two Player of the Match awards. After several seasons with Kolkata, he was picked up by the Mumbai Indians in 2020, though opportunities were limited.

Across leagues and continents, Chris Lynn’s career has been defined by explosive batting, remarkable T20 feats and a persistent battle with injuries, leaving him remembered as one of the most formidable short-format batters of his generation.
