About

Keshav Maharaj is a committed and intelligent cricketer, widely regarded as one of South Africa’s most reliable performers across formats. A classical left-arm orthodox spinner and a capable right-handed lower-order batter, Maharaj brings control, versatility, and leadership to the national side.

He made his first-class debut at just 16 for KwaZulu-Natal in 2006–07 and was promoted to the Dolphins in the 2009–10 season. His talent was evident early, as he starred on the South Africa Academy tour to Bangladesh in 2010, picking up 13 wickets in two four-day matches, and 4/12 in a T20 game while opening the bowling.

Maharaj gained valuable experience playing league cricket in England with Cuckfield (Sussex Premier League) in 2013 and later with Nelson (Lancashire League) in 2015. His domestic consistency eventually earned him a national call-up, and he made his Test debut during the 2016 tour of Australia, instantly becoming South Africa’s first-choice spinner.

With excellent control and the ability to extract bounce and turn, Maharaj proved a vital component in South Africa’s pace-heavy attack. He delivered standout performances on the 2017 New Zealand tour (15 wickets) and claimed 17 wickets in the England series that followed. His ODI debut came during the 2017 tour to England, and he was also included in the 2017 Champions Trophy squad.

In 2018 and 2019, Maharaj had successful County Cricket stints with Lancashire and Yorkshire, respectively. His Test career peaked when he claimed 9/129 against Sri Lanka, becoming only the second left-arm spinner after Rangana Herath to achieve such a feat in a Test innings.

One of Maharaj’s most historic moments came in 2021, when he became just the second South African to take a Test hat-trick, dismissing Kieron Powell, Jason Holder, and Joshua Da Silva in successive balls during a Test in the West Indies.

In a unique twist, Maharaj was named T20I captain for a tour of Sri Lanka before even making his debut in the format. He led the side to a win on debut and took a wicket with his very first T20I delivery. He went on to represent South Africa in the 2021 and 2022 T20 World Cups, and was also part of the squad for the 2023 ODI World Cup.

A calm leader, tactical bowler, and dependable lower-order batter, Keshav Maharaj remains an indispensable asset in South Africa’s multi-format plans.
