Tilak Varma, Shardul Thakur Star as Mumbai Indians Hand PBKS Fifth Straight Defeat
Punjab Kings suffered a major blow to their playoff hopes after slumping to a fifth consecutive defeat, losing by six wickets to Mumbai Indians in a high-scoring IPL clash in Dharamsala on Friday.
Despite the loss, PBKS remain fourth on the points table with 13 points from 12 matches. However, both Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals are breathing down their necks with 12 points each and a game in hand.
Mumbai were without regular captain Hardik Pandya, who is recovering from back spasms, while stand-in skipper Suryakumar Yadav missed the match due to personal reasons. In their absence, Jasprit Bumrah captained MI for the first time in the IPL and chose to bowl first after winning the toss.
PBKS got off to a promising start thanks to Prabhsimran Singh, who smashed a quickfire 57 off 32 balls. The hosts raced to 100 within 11 overs before Shardul Thakur triggered a dramatic collapse with a brilliant four-wicket haul.
Bowling clever cross-seam deliveries, Thakur dismissed Prabhsimran and then removed captain Shreyas Iyer two balls later. PBKS kept losing wickets regularly and slipped to 140 for 7 in the 17th over.
However, a late counterattack revived the innings. Azmatullah Omarzai blasted 38 off 17 balls, while Impact Player Vishnu Vinod and Xavier Bartlett added an unbeaten 34-run stand off just 12 balls to propel PBKS to a competitive 200 for 8.
Chasing 201, MI started cautiously before Ryan Rickelton launched an aggressive assault. The left-hander hammered 48 off only 23 deliveries, helping Mumbai reach 59 in the powerplay.
PBKS fought back strongly through Omarzai, Marco Jansen and Yuzvendra Chahal, reducing MI to 89 for 3 after 10 overs. At one stage, Mumbai still needed 72 runs from the final five overs.
But Tilak Varma turned the game around with a sensational unbeaten 75 off just 33 balls. He first attacked Chahal in a crucial over before combining with Will Jacks to dismantle the PBKS bowling in the death overs.
The decisive moment came in the 18th over when Jacks and Tilak smashed Jansen for two sixes and two boundaries. PBKS still had a chance with 14 runs needed off the final over, but Jacks opened with a six off a full toss from Arshdeep Singh.
With eight required off the last three deliveries, Tilak held his nerve and hammered consecutive sixes to seal a thrilling victory for Mumbai on the penultimate ball of the match.
The win keeps Mumbai alive in the playoff race, while PBKS now face mounting pressure heading into the final stretch of the tournament.
