Joe Root Hails England’s Response to ‘Unusual’ Summer After 3-0 Pakistan Series Win

England Test captain Joe Root believes the team’s emphatic 3-0 series victory over Pakistan has brought much-needed clarity after a turbulent and “unusual” summer for English cricket.

England sealed the clean sweep at Edgbaston on day four, chasing down a modest target of 130 before lunch. Root remained unbeaten on 62, while Jordan Cox scored an unbeaten 59 to guide England comfortably home.

The victory capped a summer marked by controversy, leadership changes and off-field incidents. England entered the season hoping to recover from their 4-1 Ashes defeat but soon found themselves facing fresh problems.

Ben Stokes stepped down as Test captain following England’s 2-1 series defeat by New Zealand, while Brendon McCullum was later dismissed as Test head coach. Root subsequently returned to the captaincy and faced further distractions when England fast bowler Brydon Carse was involved in an off-field incident in Derby.

Reflecting on the summer, Root admitted there had been considerable uncertainty but praised the team for maintaining its focus.

“It’s been a very unusual summer,” Root said. “There’s been a lot of different things happen. We had a resignation mid-series, there have been a few off-field incidents and we’ve got a new coach.”

Root said the team’s ability to respond positively to the distractions was the most important aspect.

“Whether you call it chaos, whether you call it unusual, whether you call it unsettling, all are fair. But ultimately, the thing that I care about, and that’s most important, is what happens from that.”

England’s new Test head coach Stephen Fleming is expected to arrive in the UK shortly and will take charge after Marcus Trescothick’s spell as interim coach. Fleming has remained in regular contact with Root during the Pakistan series, with the pair expected to discuss England’s future plans next week.

Seaming Conditions Could Hold Ashes Key

Pakistan’s stand-in Test coach Mike Hesson believes England could gain an advantage in next year’s Ashes if they are able to produce similar seaming conditions.

Bowlers dominated the three Tests at Headingley, Lord’s and Edgbaston, with Ollie Robinson emerging as the standout performer after claiming 21 wickets at an average of just 8.76.

Batting proved significantly more difficult throughout the series. There were 20 scores of 50 or more across the three Tests, but none resulted in a century. England managed only one hundred during the entire summer, with Ben Duckett’s 113 against New Zealand at Trent Bridge their sole three-figure score.

Hesson believes England’s pace attack is particularly well suited to conditions offering movement off the pitch.

“I think England are probably better equipped to dealing with that, with a Dukes ball, than they are on a flat one,” Hesson said.

He added that England’s seamers could pose a major threat to Australia’s batting line-up if similar conditions are prepared for the Ashes.

Root Admits England’s Batters Must Adapt

Root, however, acknowledged that conditions designed to challenge Australia could also create problems for England’s own batters.

The former England captain endured a relatively modest summer by his standards, averaging 33.50 with three fifties and no centuries. England’s overall batting average of 24.61 was also considerably lower than their 33.04 average in 2023.

Root said England would need to adapt if seam-friendly pitches become a feature of future series.

“​​You’ve got to adapt and find ways of managing that,” he said.

Recalling his early experiences in Australia, Root noted how Test cricket has evolved over the years, with teams constantly having to adjust their strategies to changing conditions.

“The game evolves and you’ve got to evolve with it,” he said. “If that’s how it’s going to be moving forward, we’ve got to move too.”

For England, the 3-0 victory over Pakistan provides a positive conclusion to a summer of upheaval. With Fleming now set to take charge and the Ashes on the horizon, Root believes the team finally has the clarity needed to move forward.
