Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto believes his team's historic Test victory over Australia in Darwin has shown the progress Bangladesh cricket has made, while the heavy defeat in Mackay has provided valuable lessons ahead of their upcoming tour of South Africa. Australia bounced back strongly in the second Test, defeating Bangladesh by an innings and 51 runs after suffering a nine-wicket defeat in the series opener in Darwin. Despite the setback, Shanto said Bangladesh could take pride in securing a landmark victory against Australia on their home soil. "I don't think anyone will forget what we have done in Darwin, but it is also true that we didn't play good cricket in this Test," Shanto said. "We won a good Test match in Darwin. It is a win to be proud of. We now have two wins of such magnitude. We have defeated New Zealand and Australia in their conditions." Bangladesh's victory in Darwin came less than five years after their memorable eight-wicket win over New Zealand in Mount Maunganui in January 2022. Shanto believes those victories demonstrate that Bangladesh are capable of competing with established Test teams in their own conditions. "I hope we do it in South Africa, which will only help our Test team," he said. Veteran legspinner Karn Sharma has announced his retirement from international and Indian domestic cricket at the age of 38, bringing the curtain down on a career that spanned nearly two decades. The Railways cricketer announced his decision on Saturday night following a UP T20 League match between Kanpur Superstars and Meerut Mavericks. He will play his final game during his team's last match of the Lucknow leg on August 25. "I now want to retire. I am extremely grateful to my family, BCCI, Railways, UPCA, Andhra, Vidarbha Cricket Association and everyone who has supported me throughout this journey," Karn said after making the announcement. "After this, I will be available for coaching and other responsibilities related to the game of cricket." Karn made his first-class, List A and T20 debuts during the 2007-08 domestic season and initially developed as an allrounder. He made an immediate impact, scoring a century on his Ranji Trophy debut. His breakthrough season came in 2012-13, when he claimed 21 wickets at an average of 19.04 in three Ranji Trophy matches. His performances earned him the BCCI's Best Under-25 Cricketer award and helped put him on the national selectors' radar. In 2014, Sunrisers Hyderabad bought Karn for INR 3.75 crore at the IPL auction, making him the most expensive uncapped Indian player at the time. His performances soon earned him an international call-up for India's tour of England. Karn made his T20I debut on that tour and dismissed England batter Joe Root. He subsequently joined India's ODI squad for the series against Sri Lanka and made his debut in the memorable match in which Rohit Sharma scored 264, still the highest individual score in men's ODI cricket. Karn played two ODIs in the series but did not take a wicket. Later that year, he was selected for India's Test tour of Australia and featured in the Adelaide Test, taking two wickets in each innings. That proved to be his final international appearance. Although he was selected for India's limited-overs tour of Zimbabwe in 2015, an injury ruled him out. He ultimately finished his international career with one Test, two ODIs and one T20I. Karn's biggest success came in the IPL. In 2018, he became the first player to win IPL titles with three different franchises, having lifted the trophy with Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2016, Mumbai Indians in 2017 and Chennai Super Kings in 2018. His journey also included stints with Vidarbha and Andhra before he returned to Railways. Karn last played in the IPL for Mumbai Indians in 2025 and remained part of the Railways setup across all three formats during the 2025-26 domestic season. Karn finishes his first-class career just three matches short of 100 appearances. Across 97 first-class matches, he claimed 270 wickets at an average of 27.60, including 14 five-wicket hauls. With the bat, he scored 2,866 runs in 138 innings, including two centuries and 14 half-centuries. In List A cricket, Karn took 153 wickets in 123 matches, including three five-wicket hauls, while also scoring a century and six fifties. His T20 career produced 168 wickets in 191 matches, with 87 of those coming in 90 IPL appearances. After years of competing across domestic cricket and the IPL, Karn Sharma now begins the next chapter of his career, with coaching and other cricket-related responsibilities set to be his focus following retirement.

Shadab Khan produced a stunning late-order assault to guide Antigua and Barbuda Falcons (ABF) to a five-wicket victory over Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR), propelling the Falcons to the top of the CPL 2026 points table on Saturday night. Chasing 166, the Falcons appeared to be in serious trouble at 92 for 5 when Shadab walked in at No. 7. The Pakistan all-rounder, however, turned the match on its head with an unbeaten 52 off just 20 balls. But Nathan Edward's 18th over changed the complexion of the match. Shadab smashed three sixes in the first four balls, taking 27 runs from the over and shifting the momentum decisively in favour of the Falcons. With only 11 runs required from the final two overs, Shadab finished the contest in emphatic fashion, hitting Terrance Hinds for two more sixes to complete a remarkable comeback and earn the Player-of-the-Match award. The Falcons had started their chase aggressively, with Rahkeem Cornwall taking 14 runs from the opening over. However, he was run out from the first ball of the second over while attempting a quick single. Marnus Labuschagne’s place in Australia’s Test team is under serious scrutiny after another disappointing batting performance against Bangladesh in the second Test at Mackay. The Australia No. 3 was dismissed for just four runs in the first innings, bowled by Shoriful Islam after the ball cannoned off his thigh pad and into leg stump. The dismissal followed scores of 1 and 31 in the opening Test, further extending a prolonged run of poor form. Labuschagne has now gone more than two years without a Test century. His last hundred came against England at Old Trafford in July 2023, and since the beginning of the 2023-24 season, he has averaged only 25.43 in Test cricket. Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting believes the selectors may now need to make a change. “I admire what they [the selectors] are trying to do with Marnus,” Ponting said on Channel 7. “I admire that they tried to get him and get him back to his best, but it’s been way too long now.” Ponting acknowledged that Labuschagne was unlucky with his latest dismissal but argued that technical issues were contributing to his struggles. “The worry that I had with him, I think there’s some technical deficiency there but he’s making the margin for error for the bowlers too great,” Ponting said. “With the length, he can’t score off the back foot. If you can’t score off the back foot in Test cricket then batting becomes a hard game.” Ponting added that he believed it was time for Australia to consider another option in the batting order. Labuschagne had admitted before the second Test that his dismissal in the opening match was partly the result of trying to force the pace. He said he had wanted to put pressure on the bowler but acknowledged that he had played a shot he did not need to play at that stage. Australia head coach Andrew McDonald had also said before the match that Labuschagne “needs some big runs”, while captain Pat Cummins expressed confidence that the batter was close to rediscovering his best form after facing him in training. However, Labuschagne managed only one scoring shot in his latest innings before his dismissal. Sri Lanka captain Dhananjaya de Silva has called for the emergence of more genuinely fast bowlers, saying he would like the national team to have “two or three bowlers” capable of consistently bowling above 140kph. Sri Lanka have increasingly looked to field two seamers in Test cricket, with Asitha Fernando established as the team’s leading fast bowler. Fernando has built his reputation on consistency, accuracy and intensity while operating around the 130kph mark. However, Sri Lanka have sought greater variation by pairing him with a faster bowler, with Lahiru Kumara currently occupying that role. Kumara has taken 106 wickets in 36 Tests at an average of 36.38, but his career has been interrupted by repeated injuries. He also struggled in the first Test against India in Galle, returning figures of 2 for 104. “Even with Lahiru Kumara, we have tried very hard to get him to play injury-free,” de Silva said ahead of the second Test. “At the moment, given our resources, Lahiru Kumara is the best match to partner Asitha. Asitha’s line and length is perfect, and Lahiru Kumara has the pace. With the resources we have now, these are the best players.” Despite backing the current combination, de Silva believes Sri Lanka need a wider pool of fast-bowling options, particularly bowlers capable of generating genuine pace. “I’d also like for there to be two or three bowlers who can bowl at more than 140kph, but unfortunately we only have one bowler like that in the Test set-up,” he said. Sri Lanka do have several quick bowlers in their wider system, including Dushmantha Chameera, Dilshan Madushanka and Matheesha Pathirana. Madushanka was part of Sri Lanka’s Test squad for the Galle match but was released to play domestic T20 cricket and was not included in the squad for the Test at SSC. Chameera, meanwhile, has played only 12 Tests, with his most recent appearance coming in 2021. His injury history, combined with his importance to Sri Lanka’s limited-overs teams, has resulted in the selectors managing his workload carefully. According to de Silva, there is currently no major plan to significantly expand the pool of fast bowlers available for Test cricket. The Sri Lanka captain also believes the team’s existing seamers need to develop greater confidence when playing on home pitches. “Foreign pace bowlers have taken five wickets in Galle, for instance, but recently, none of our seamers have done that at Galle or SSC,” de Silva said. “Our fast bowlers lack that confidence. If they can raise their game a little bit — by a few percent — we can move forward better as a team.” De Silva has made the use of two fast bowlers a consistent feature of his captaincy. In previous years, Sri Lanka frequently relied heavily on spin at home and often selected just one specialist seamer. “Every match we’ve played under me, we’ve had two pace bowlers, when in the past, we would only bowl one,” de Silva said. “I believe pacers have a role to play in Sri Lanka. If your fast bowlers can get wickets here, they can get wickets anywhere. That’s something we have to learn quickly.” The statistics highlight Sri Lanka’s struggles to produce five-wicket hauls from fast bowlers on home soil. In the past 15 years, only Nuwan Pradeep has taken a five-wicket haul for Sri Lanka in a Test in the country, claiming 6 for 132 against India in 2017. By contrast, visiting fast bowlers have taken 14 five-wicket hauls in Sri Lanka during the same period. Mitchell Starc and Junaid Khan have each achieved the feat three times. For de Silva, the challenge is not simply about finding bowlers who can bowl quickly but developing a stronger fast-bowling culture within Sri Lankan Test cricket. “I’m hoping we will produce more cricketers like that in future,” he said. Sri Lanka’s growing emphasis on pace represents a significant shift from their traditional approach to Test cricket at home. De Silva believes that developing a stronger group of fast bowlers could give the team greater variety and help them compete more effectively, both in Sri Lanka and overseas.

Charlie Allison produced a superb unbeaten century to lead a remarkable Essex fightback against Somerset on the third day of their Rothesay County Championship Division One clash at Taunton. After being forced to follow on, Essex reached 314 for 3 at stumps, wiping out their first-innings deficit and taking a three-run lead over Somerset, who had posted 469. The 21-year-old Allison remained unbeaten on 105 from 219 deliveries, hitting 13 fours and two sixes. Matt Critchley provided excellent support with an unbeaten 76 as the pair shared a crucial fourth-wicket stand of 187. Their partnership completely changed the complexion of the match after Somerset had dominated the opening stages of the day. Somerset Strike Early Essex resumed their second innings at 59 without loss, with Dean Elgar and Paul Walter looking comfortable against a Somerset attack led in the absence of injured captain Lewis Gregory by James Rew.
