Delhi Capitals have strengthened their coaching staff ahead of IPL 2027 by appointing former Sri Lankan pacer Chaminda Vaas as their fast-bowling coach. The move follows the appointments of Sourav Ganguly as head coach and Yuvraj Singh as assistant and batting coach, while former Indian leg-spinner Amit Mishra is also set to join the franchise as spin-bowling coach. According to a report by ESPNcricinfo on September 14, Vaas will make his coaching debut in the Indian Premier League (IPL), bringing extensive international coaching experience to the Delhi-based franchise. Vaas Emphasises Freedom and Responsibility for Bowlers Speaking in a video released by Delhi Capitals, Vaas highlighted his coaching philosophy, stressing the importance of giving bowlers the freedom to develop their own plans while providing guidance when required. “I give a lot of freedom for the bowlers,” Vaas said. He added that bowlers should understand their strengths, develop their own strategies and know how to execute their plans and field settings. The former Sri Lankan fast bowler believes a coach's role is to help players improve their understanding of the game and take their performances to the next level. Extensive International Coaching Experience Although IPL 2027 will be Vaas' first coaching assignment in the league, he has considerable experience working with international teams. He has served in multiple coaching roles with the Sri Lanka men's team between 2012 and 2022, including a brief stint in 2021 that ended following a pay dispute. Vaas began his coaching career as a consultant with the New Zealand men's team and also worked with Ireland during the 2016 ICC World Twenty20. In addition, he has worked with Sri Lanka Cricket as a fast-bowling consultant and academy mentor. His coaching assignments have also included NYS Lagos in the 2024 Zim Afro T10 League and Kandy Royals in the 2026 Lanka Premier League. Vaas is no stranger to the IPL as a player, having represented the now-defunct Deccan Chargers during the tournament's first three seasons. Amit Mishra Set to Join as Spin-Bowling Coach Delhi Capitals are also expected to bring in former India leg-spinner Amit Mishra as their spin-bowling coach. Both Vaas and Mishra are understood to have already spent time in Delhi working with players at the franchise's academy. The appointments indicate a significant overhaul of the coaching setup as DC look to improve their performances after finishing sixth in the 2026 IPL season. The franchise had been expected to make changes to its coaching staff following two seasons under team director Venugopal Rao, head coach Hemang Badani, bowling coach Munaf Patel and assistant coach Ian Bell. Changes to the Squad and Coaching Structure Delhi Capitals have also made changes to their playing personnel ahead of the next season. The franchise traded left-arm fast bowler T Natarajan to Sunrisers Hyderabad and brought in leg-spinner Zeeshan Ansari. They had also traded Kuldeep Yadav to Lucknow Super Giants in exchange for Rishabh Pant. DC, who are yet to win an IPL title, will hope that the revamped coaching team and changes to the squad can help them mount a stronger challenge in 2027. The restructuring also reflects the arrangement between the franchise's co-owners, GMR Sports India Pvt Ltd and JSW Sports, following IPL 2024. Under the agreement, the two ownership groups alternate control of franchise operations in two-year cycles. With Ganguly, Yuvraj, Vaas and the expected addition of Mishra, Delhi Capitals are assembling an experienced coaching group as they look to turn their fortunes around in the upcoming IPL season.

Bangladesh have suffered a major setback ahead of their ODI tri-series in the United Arab Emirates, with regular white-ball captain Litton Das ruled out of the tournament due to a right hip joint injury. Vice-captain Towhid Hridoy has taken over the captaincy, while Parvez Hossain Emon has been named as Litton’s replacement in the squad. The tri-series, featuring Bangladesh, Zimbabwe and Afghanistan, began on Saturday, with Bangladesh facing Zimbabwe in the opening match. Hridoy led the side in the tournament opener after Litton failed to pass a fitness test. “Litton Das came to us with a right hip joint complaint,” Bangladesh team physio Bayezid Islam Khan said after the toss. “We did an MRI report which told us something was wrong. Litton still tried to take a fitness test today but couldn't match the benchmark, so he is not available for this series.” Litton, who was appointed Bangladesh’s full-time ODI captain in July, has struggled with injuries in recent months and also missed the team’s tour of Zimbabwe in July. However, he recently impressed in the one-off Test against Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi, earning Player of the Match honours after scoring 53 and 102 and taking eight catches. Meanwhile, all-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz also missed Bangladesh’s opening match against Zimbabwe due to a fever. According to team physio Bayezid, Mehidy had been suffering from the illness for the previous three days. This is the first time since September 2023 that both Litton and Mehidy have missed an ODI for Bangladesh. Bangladesh are also without fast bowler Nahid Rana, who has been sidelined since mid-July with a side strain. Rana was recently in Perth for a medical check-up, with the latest update suggesting that he was expected to return to competitive cricket later this month. With Litton ruled out for the entire tournament and Mehidy’s availability uncertain, Bangladesh will need their remaining players to step up as they compete against Zimbabwe and Afghanistan in the UAE tri-series.

Mahela Jayawardene has stepped down as head coach of Mumbai Indians (MI), the franchise announced on Saturday, bringing an end to his second stint in the role. The development comes at a crucial time for the five-time IPL champions, who are preparing for the upcoming season following a disappointing campaign in 2026. Jayawardene returned as Mumbai Indians head coach ahead of the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season, replacing Mark Boucher. He had previously held the position from 2017 to 2022, during which the franchise won three IPL titles. In a statement released by the franchise, Jayawardene expressed gratitude to the Mumbai Indians management, players, coaching staff and supporters for their continued support throughout his association with the team. "Mumbai Indians has been a very special part of my journey for over a decade now," Jayawardene said. He also thanked franchise owners Nita Ambani and Akash Ambani for their trust, support and friendship, adding that he would always cherish his time with the team. Jayawardene’s Successful First Stint with Mumbai Indians Jayawardene enjoyed considerable success during his first tenure as head coach, guiding Mumbai Indians to three IPL titles and establishing himself as one of the franchise's most successful coaches. After stepping away from the head coach position in 2022, he served as the global head of performance for the Mumbai Indians group from 2022 to 2024. In that capacity, he oversaw the franchise's wider cricket operations, including MI Emirates in the ILT20, MI New York in Major League Cricket and MI Cape Town in the SA20. His return to the head coach position ahead of the 2025 season, however, produced mixed results. Mumbai Indians finished fourth in the league stage in 2025 before losing in Qualifier 2. The team's fortunes declined further in 2026, when MI finished ninth after managing only four wins in 12 matches. Mumbai Indians last won the IPL title in 2020, completing back-to-back championship victories under Jayawardene's leadership. Nita Ambani Thanks Jayawardene for His Contribution Mumbai Indians owner Nita Ambani paid tribute to the outgoing coach, highlighting his leadership, integrity and commitment to the franchise over the years. "Mahela has made a significant contribution to Mumbai Indians over the years. His calm leadership, integrity and deep love for the game have meant so much to us," Ambani said. She added that Jayawardene would always remain part of the Mumbai Indians family and wished him success in his future endeavours. Mumbai Indians Face Key Decisions Ahead of IPL 2027 Jayawardene's departure leaves Mumbai Indians searching for a new head coach with the IPL retention deadline approaching on November 15. The next auction is expected to take place in Goa around a month later. The franchise also faces questions surrounding captain Hardik Pandya following its disappointing 2026 campaign. Speculation about a possible trade involving Pandya emerged after Mumbai's poor finish, although no confirmed decision on his future was mentioned in the announcement. Pandya's individual numbers also came under scrutiny during the season. He scored 206 runs in 10 innings at a strike rate of 138.25, with a highest score of 40, while taking four wickets in 10 matches. With a new head coach to appoint and important decisions to make ahead of the next season, Mumbai Indians face a significant rebuilding challenge as they look to return to title contention in IPL 2027.

Sanjay Govil, owner of Major League Cricket (MLC) franchise Washington Freedom and co-owner of The Hundred's Welsh Fire, is keen to expand his portfolio of T20 cricket franchises. He is considering acquiring either a 50% stake or full ownership of a BBL club, depending on the investment opportunity and financial viability. Cricket Australia approved the privatisation of the BBL last month following months of debate. The first phase of the Melbourne Renegades' sale process has already begun, with Cricket Australia, Cricket Victoria and their consultant, Raine Group, inviting expressions of interest for a 100% sale of the franchise. Several Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise owners are expected to explore opportunities, with the aim of identifying a preferred buyer ahead of the BBL 2026-27 season, which begins on December 12. Renegades and Hurricanes on Govil's Radar Govil confirmed that he is monitoring the Renegades' sale process but acknowledged that competition among prospective buyers could be intense. "I'm interested in the Renegades, it's on the radar," Govil told ESPNcricinfo. "But I think there are going to be a lot of big players who will be interested. I need to focus on what I am capable of doing. I don't want to get into a bidding war." The entrepreneur is also interested in the Hobart Hurricanes, particularly because of the existing connections between the franchise and his Washington Freedom team. Several players feature for both sides, while Ricky Ponting, the Hurricanes' head of strategy, has coached Freedom for the past three seasons. Govil believes smaller franchises could offer greater opportunities to make a meaningful impact. "(Hurricanes)... that's our size of team. If you look at the Welsh Fire and Freedom, we have sort of smaller franchises compared to others," he said. "There are the big boys who want to go after the big teams. I love Hobart, they are a winning team. We can make more impact in those teams." New Hobart Stadium Could Attract Investment The Hurricanes could become an attractive investment opportunity because of Tasmania's plans for a proposed billion-dollar, enclosed stadium, which is expected to become the franchise's home ground from 2031. Cricket Tasmania hopes the new facility will strengthen the club's commercial appeal and help attract private investors. Govil, who is funding the development of a cricket ground for Washington Freedom in Frederick, Maryland, said he would be open to investing in the Hurricanes' proposed stadium. "I absolutely would be interested," he said. "Would have to look at the economics and all that stuff, but I'm all for making sure that we have the best facilities." The Washington Freedom ground, located around 70 kilometres north of Washington DC, is expected to cost tens of millions of dollars and could be ready for the 2027 MLC season. BBL Privatisation Models Differ Across States While Cricket Victoria is preparing for a potential full sale of the Renegades, other state cricket associations are considering retaining majority ownership of their franchises. Cricket Tasmania is among those more likely to favour selling a 49% minority stake to a private investor while retaining the remaining 51%. However, no final decisions have been made by states other than Victoria. Govil's previous investment in Welsh Fire offers a possible model for such arrangements. He initially acquired a 49% stake in the Hundred franchise before increasing his holding to 50%. The American entrepreneur has emphasised that he wants an active management role rather than simply investing capital. "I'm not just looking to be an investor. I love actively managing teams," Govil said. "The teams I have...I have at least 50% or 100% stake." Govil Opposes Franchise Rebranding One of the major concerns surrounding the BBL's privatisation is the possibility that new investors could change established team identities, names and colours. The issue has gained attention in England's The Hundred, where the Oval Invincibles were transformed into MI London following an investment by Reliance Industries Limited, the owners of the Mumbai Indians. Govil, however, said he does not support rebranding simply for commercial reasons. His position could make him an appealing potential investor for clubs such as Perth Scorchers, whose name and colours have strong recognition in Western Australia. "I don't believe in change for the sake of it," he said. "I always believe that local identity and local culture is very important. I strongly believe that the traditions need to continue." He added that franchises should focus on strengthening their existing identities rather than abandoning their histories. "I think we need to keep building on the history and the tradition. That's how I see it." Sports Franchises as Long-Term Investments Govil's interest in the BBL reflects the growing appeal of sports franchises as long-term investment assets, particularly as investors look for industries that artificial intelligence is unlikely to replace. With Washington Freedom in the United States and Welsh Fire in England already part of his portfolio, a BBL acquisition would give Govil a presence in three major cricket markets. He views live sport as a unique combination of entertainment, teamwork, community and commercial opportunity. "Sport is something that AI cannot replace in the future," Govil said. "It's a great asset. It's a great diversification asset. It's fun. It's sports. It's teamwork. It encompasses everything that people enjoy." Govil also expressed confidence in the BBL's position in the global T20 landscape, describing it as one of the most attractive opportunities for investors seeking exposure to franchise cricket. "To me, the BBL is probably the number two T20 league in the world. I think it's a great opportunity to get into," he said. With the Renegades' sale process underway and other BBL franchises considering different ownership structures, Govil's next move will depend on the financial terms, level of control and long-term growth potential offered by prospective investments.

India all-rounder Deepti Sharma has praised debutant Niki Prasad for her impressive performance in the first T20I against Zimbabwe, saying the youngster showed remarkable confidence despite making her international debut in a high-pressure situation. India secured a comfortable six-wicket victory in the match in Raipur, chasing down Zimbabwe’s target of 115 with four wickets in hand and 26 balls to spare. However, the hosts faced an early setback after Zimbabwe were restricted to 114, as off-spinner Nyasha Gwanzura picked up three wickets in her first two overs to leave India struggling at 19 for 4. Deepti and Prasad then stepped up under pressure, stitching together a crucial 82-run partnership for the fifth wicket to guide India to victory. Deepti scored 49 off 37 balls, while Prasad remained unbeaten on 39 off 35 deliveries in an impressive debut performance. Speaking at the post-match press conference, Deepti lauded the young batter’s composure and maturity. "Niki played really well. Honestly, it didn't seem at all like she was making her debut. It felt like she had played quite a few matches in the past, for the country," Deepti said. She further praised Prasad’s ability to build a partnership when the team needed it most, adding that the performance would give the youngster significant confidence for the matches ahead. Deepti Says India Remained Calm Despite Early Wickets Despite losing four wickets inside the first few overs, Deepti insisted that there was no panic in the Indian dressing room. She explained that the players focused on assessing the situation and finding a way to rebuild the innings. "To tell you the truth, the two of us were there, there was Richa Ghosh as well, batting behind us. It didn't feel like a situation where anything could happen. We took a bit of a pause at that moment, and thought about what to do next," she said. Deepti also emphasised that facing challenging situations was an important part of a team’s development. According to her, handling pressure helps players grow stronger individually and collectively. She added that such situations were necessary from time to time and that India successfully turned a difficult position into a match-winning opportunity. Deepti Backs India’s Aggressive Batting Approach India’s early collapse was largely the result of attacking shots that failed to produce the desired outcome. However, Deepti defended the team’s aggressive approach, stating that the side would continue to play positive cricket despite occasional setbacks. "Of course, we want to play an aggressive brand of cricket, and that was in our mind. Occasionally these things happen in a match. There is no god who gives you exactly what you want. But we always learn from our innings and our matches," she said. The experienced all-rounder expressed confidence that the team would learn from its mistakes and improve in the upcoming matches. Deepti Disappointed at Missing Half-Century Deepti narrowly missed out on a half-century after scoring 49, falling to a top-edged sweep shot when India needed just 14 runs for victory. Reflecting on her dismissal, she admitted that she was disappointed at not being able to finish the match herself. "At that moment I felt bad for not finishing the match. I had thought I should build a partnership, take us close to the target, and then finish, but I made a small mistake," Deepti said. Nevertheless, her valuable contribution, alongside Prasad’s composed innings, ensured India overcame an early batting collapse to take a 1-0 lead in the T20I series against Zimbabwe.

Former India opener Wasim Jaffer has applied for the vacant senior national selector’s position in men’s cricket, putting himself in contention for a key role in Indian cricket administration. The position became vacant after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) decided against renewing Ajit Agarkar’s contract. Jaffer’s application makes him a potential candidate for the chairman’s role, subject to selection by the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC). The 48-year-old former batter represented India in 31 Test matches between 2000 and 2008, scoring 1,944 runs at an average of 34.10. His Test career included five centuries, among them double centuries against the West Indies and Pakistan. Jaffer also played two One-Day Internationals in 2006. Jaffer’s biggest strength lies in his outstanding record in domestic cricket. He remains the highest run-scorer in Ranji Trophy history and holds the record for the most centuries in the prestigious domestic competition. Across 260 first-class matches, Jaffer accumulated 19,410 runs and scored 57 centuries at an average of more than 50. He began his senior domestic career with Mumbai in the 1996-97 season before finishing his playing career with Vidarbha. The Cricket Advisory Committee, comprising Ashok Malhotra and Jatin Paranjape, will be responsible for selecting the new member. If appointed, Jaffer would have the highest number of Test appearances among the candidates being considered for the chairman’s position and would therefore be in line to lead the selection panel. Jaffer has played seven more Tests than former India spinner Pragyan Ojha, who has 24 Test appearances. The other members of the current selection panel are RP Singh, Ajay Ratra and Shiv Sunder Das. Jaffer’s extensive domestic cricket experience and impressive first-class record could strengthen his case for the role as the BCCI looks to fill the vacant position on the men’s senior selection committee.

Jasprit Bumrah has been named in India’s squad for the upcoming two-match Test series against New Zealand, while Rishabh Pant’s participation remains subject to fitness clearance. Bumrah will miss the ODI series as India manage his workload ahead of major international assignments. India have announced their squads for the upcoming ODI and two-match Test series against New Zealand, with several key players returning to the Test setup and changes made to the ODI leadership for the final two matches. Bumrah, who has not played a Test match since November 2025, is set to return to lead India’s pace attack in the Test series. The first Test will begin in Wellington on November 19. According to the team management’s long-term plans, Bumrah’s workload will be carefully managed to keep him fit for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at home early next year and the 2027 ODI World Cup, scheduled to take place in Africa in October and November. The fast bowler last featured for India at the Asian Games in Japan, where the team won the gold medal. He is currently training at home in Ahmedabad and is expected to travel to the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru for fitness drills before joining the team in New Zealand. Rishabh Pant’s Fitness Remains a Concern Wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant has also been included in the Test squad, but his availability will depend on fitness clearance. Pant suffered a side strain during the recent Irani Cup while captaining Rest of India. The injury occurred when he attempted a sweep shot in the first innings. He was subsequently ruled out of the first two unofficial Tests against New Zealand A. However, Pant is expected to feature in the third unofficial Test in Lincoln from November 7 to 10 as he works towards regaining full fitness. India captain Shubman Gill, KL Rahul and Anshul Kamboj are also likely to participate in the third unofficial Test as part of their preparations for the upcoming series. Prasidh Krishna’s ODI Participation Subject to Fitness Fast bowler Prasidh Krishna has been included in India’s Test squad, while his participation in the ODI series remains subject to fitness clearance. Reports indicate that his medical scans revealed a left hamstring strain rather than a tear. The pacer has spent the past two weeks focusing on strength and conditioning, recovery, massages and mobility exercises. Krishna has been selected for only the first three ODIs, with his fitness set to determine his availability. Meanwhile, Akash Deep has returned to the Test squad after impressing in the Irani Cup and the opening round of the Ranji Trophy for Bengal. Anshul Kamboj has also earned another opportunity in the Test side after making his debut against England in Manchester in July 2025. Mohammed Siraj and seam-bowling allrounder Nitish Kumar Reddy will provide additional depth to India’s pace attack. Sai Sudharsan Returns; No Place for Manav Suthar B Sai Sudharsan has returned to the Test squad after missing the Sri Lanka series because of a toe injury. He is likely to serve as a backup batter after recently featuring in the four-day and one-day series against Australia A in Puducherry. However, there was no place for left-arm spinner Manav Suthar, despite his impressive performance in Sri Lanka, where he claimed 16 wickets across four innings. India have opted for Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar as their spin-bowling allrounders, with Kuldeep Yadav completing the specialist spin options. Shreyas Iyer to Lead India in Final Two ODIs India will have two captains during the five-match ODI series against New Zealand. Regular captain Shubman Gill will lead the side in the first three matches, while Shreyas Iyer will take charge for the fourth and fifth ODIs. Gill, KL Rahul and Anshul Kamboj will feature only in the first three matches before shifting their focus towards preparation for the Test series. Jadeja, who was part of India’s ODI squad against West Indies, has been left out of the ODI selections for the New Zealand tour. Wicketkeeper-batter Kumar Kushagra has earned his maiden India call-up after being included in the squad for the final two ODIs. Auqib Nabi, who made his international debut in the second ODI against West Indies in Guwahati, has also been selected for the last two matches. Arshdeep Singh returns to the ODI squad after being included only in the T20I side for the recent home series against West Indies. His last ODI appearance came against England at Lord’s in July. With Bumrah returning to the Test setup, Pant working towards fitness, and several players managing their workloads across formats, India’s selections reflect a broader effort to balance immediate results with preparations for the upcoming international calendar. India’s Test Squad for New Zealand Series Shubman Gill (captain), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul (vice-captain), Devdutt Padikkal, Rishabh Pant (wicketkeeper)*, Dhruv Jurel (wicketkeeper), Ravindra Jadeja, Anshul Kamboj, Jasprit Bumrah, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Sai Sudharsan, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav and Mohammed Siraj. Pant’s participation is subject to fitness clearance. India Squad for the First Three ODIs Shubman Gill (captain), Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (wicketkeeper), Nitish Kumar Reddy, Axar Patel, Naman Dhir, Anshul Kamboj, Gurnoor Brar, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Arshdeep Singh, Ishan Kishan (wicketkeeper), Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna* and Kuldeep Yadav. Prasidh Krishna’s participation is subject to fitness clearance. India Squad for the Fourth and Fifth ODIs Shreyas Iyer (captain), Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Tilak Varma, Ishan Kishan (wicketkeeper), Nitish Kumar Reddy, Axar Patel, Naman Dhir, Auqib Nabi, Gurnoor Brar, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Arshdeep Singh, Kumar Kushagra (wicketkeeper), Mohammed Siraj, Yash Thakur and Kuldeep Yadav.

Aiden Markram is expected to return to South Africa’s playing XI for the second Test after missing the team’s travel from Durban to Gqeberha and both training sessions at St George’s Park due to personal reasons. South Africa’s standout batter in the Durban Test is scheduled to arrive in Gqeberha on Friday night. He is expected to attend the team’s optional training session on Saturday and is likely to feature in the second Test, which begins on Sunday. Markram’s availability will come as a major boost for South Africa, particularly after concerns emerged over his fitness following the shoulder treatment he received during the first Test. The issue was described as tightness and was treated on the field. However, he is understood to be fully available for the upcoming match, with no further concerns reported. During Markram’s absence, South Africa continued preparations with David Bedingham, Simon Harmer, Wiaan Mulder and Marco Jansen forming the slip cordon. Harmer occupied the second-slip position, although his placement there does not necessarily indicate that he will be preferred over Keshav Maharaj as the team’s specialist spinner. Senuran Muthusamy also remains an option. Ryan Rickelton, meanwhile, has been confirmed as South Africa’s designated wicketkeeper in place of Kyle Verreynne. Rickelton continued his intensive preparations behind the stumps for the second consecutive day before completing an extended batting session. Verreynne assisted the team by providing throwdowns during the training session. Matthew Breetzke and Marques Ackerman are expected to come into the side, while Rickelton is likely to move down the batting order and Tristan Stubbs is set to make way after being dropped. The two batters faced Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, Mulder and Jansen during practice, suggesting that South Africa are preparing to field the same pace-heavy bowling attack for the second Test. South Africa are also expected to play only one specialist spinner, although the final decision between Harmer, Maharaj and Muthusamy remains uncertain. Markram’s return will be particularly encouraging for South African supporters, given his importance to the batting lineup. He had also returned home early from The Hundred and missed the first ODI for personal reasons. With Markram expected to be available for Sunday’s match, South Africa will be hoping to strengthen their batting lineup and build on their performance in the opening Test. Barring any injury setbacks, he is also expected to remain available for the team’s subsequent fixtures.

Scotland and Hampshire fast bowler Brad Wheal has announced his retirement from professional cricket at the age of 30, bringing the curtain down on a decade-long career following recurring injuries. Wheal, who made his international debut for Scotland against Hong Kong in 2016, represented his country in 44 ODI and T20I matches. His most recent international appearance came at the 2026 T20 World Cup in India, where he featured in three matches. The right-arm seamer also enjoyed a successful spell with Hampshire, making his professional debut for the county in 2015 and playing 131 matches across formats. During his time with the club, he was part of two trophy-winning campaigns, helping Hampshire win the Royal London One-Day Cup in 2018 and the Vitality Blast in 2022. Recurring Injuries Force Wheal to Retire Wheal confirmed that persistent fitness problems had forced him to end his playing career, admitting that his body could no longer cope with the physical demands of fast bowling. The pacer revealed that he had suffered four stress fractures in his back and had recently undergone knee surgery. His injury troubles ultimately made continuing at the professional level impossible. "I've loved my time at Hampshire and representing Scotland as a professional cricketer, but unfortunately, recurring injuries have forced my hand, and I've made the decision to retire from playing cricket," Wheal said. He acknowledged that the decision had not been easy but said he was at peace with it after considering the impact of his injuries. Wheal also expressed pride in representing Scotland throughout his career, highlighting the importance of international cricket to him and his family. Successful Career with Hampshire Wheal made a significant contribution to Hampshire across all formats during his decade with the county. One of his standout performances came in first-class cricket in 2016, when he recorded career-best figures of 6 for 51 against Nottinghamshire. He also produced an impressive bowling display in the 2023 One-Day Cup, taking 5 for 47 against Lancashire. However, his opportunities became increasingly limited towards the end of his career. Wheal managed only one first-team appearance in the most recent season and went wicketless, with his ongoing fitness concerns preventing him from making a sustained impact. Despite the disappointing end to his playing days, his contributions to Hampshire's trophy-winning campaigns and Scotland's international progress remain important highlights of his career. Four T20 World Cups Among Career Highlights Wheal's international career was marked by appearances at four T20 World Cups, beginning with the 2022 tournament in the United Arab Emirates. His final World Cup appearance came in the 2026 edition in India, where Scotland faced several challenging opponents, including England in a closely contested match in Kolkata. Reflecting on his international journey, Wheal said representing Scotland at four World Cups had provided him with unforgettable experiences and lasting friendships. He thanked his teammates, coaches and support staff for their contributions throughout his career. He also paid tribute to Scotland supporters, particularly those who travelled overseas to follow the team. Wheal added that he would continue to follow Scotland's progress and support the team after stepping away from professional cricket. Cricket Scotland Pays Tribute to Wheal Steve Snell, Cricket Scotland's Head of Performance, praised Wheal for his contribution to Scottish cricket over the past decade. Snell highlighted the fast bowler's role in the country's development on the international stage and said he could look back on his career with considerable pride. "Brad has made a significant contribution to Scottish cricket over the past decade and has been an important part of Cricket Scotland's progress on the international stage," Snell said. He also thanked Wheal for his commitment and contribution to the national team, wishing him success in the next chapter of his life. Wheal's retirement marks the end of a career defined by international appearances, county success and memorable World Cup experiences. Although recurring injuries have brought his playing days to a premature close, he leaves behind a decade of service to both Scotland and Hampshire.

The 22-year-old will feature in a series comprising three T20 matches and five one-day games against West Indies A in St Kitts and Nevis next month. The tour will mark Jonathan Trott's first assignment as England Lions head coach following Andrew Flintoff's resignation. Ahmed's inclusion comes after a disappointing showing in two ODIs against Sri Lanka last month. Despite recently signing a new central contract with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), he has not been selected for England's upcoming white-ball tours. The Lions assignment is expected to provide Ahmed with an opportunity to regain his form and strengthen his case for a return to the national side. He has been named in both squads, with Thomas Rew appointed T20 captain and Dan Lawrence set to lead the 50-over team. Trott emphasised the importance of the Lions programme in preparing players for international cricket and helping them push for senior-team selection. "I want to create a culture where England players will benefit from coming back and working in this environment to push for national team selection across formats and by performing and helping the Lions to win games of cricket," Trott said. He added that he was excited to work with a talented group of players and highlighted the role the Lions programme had played in his own career. The squads include nine players who have recently signed England contracts for the 2026-27 season. Ahmed, Lawrence and Sam Cook hold full central contracts, while Mason Crane, James Coles, Rew, Ben McKinney, Eddie Jack and Liam Patterson-White have development contracts. England managing director Rob Key recently stressed the importance of Lions cricket, particularly in the 50-over format. He said players on development contracts would be expected to make themselves available for Lions tours, even if doing so meant missing some franchise opportunities during the winter. Meanwhile, Coles, Jack and Thomas Rew will leave the tour after the third one-day international to join England's T20I series in Australia. Asa Tribe's availability for the opening T20 fixtures could also be affected by his commitments with Jersey in the Cricket World Cup Challenge League in Kenya. Rew's appointment as T20 captain follows his success in leading England Under-19s to the World Cup final in Zimbabwe earlier this year. His elder brother, James Rew, has been included in both squads despite missing out on an ECB development contract. Ben Mayes, another member of the Under-19 World Cup squad, has also been selected for both formats. Worcestershire seamer Adam Finch has earned his maiden Lions call-up after impressing in the T20 Blast. Yorkshire all-rounder Matt Revis, however, has missed selection after reportedly undergoing Achilles surgery. The West Indies A series forms part of a busy winter schedule for the Lions, who are also due to tour South Africa from November 25 to December 23 and Sri Lanka from February 18 to March 14. The South African tour will include two four-day matches. Australia fast bowler Josh Hazlewood believes reverse swing could once again prove crucial in the upcoming Test against South Africa in Gqeberha, following its significant impact in Australia's series-opening victory in Durban. Australia made effective use of reverse swing on the abrasive Kingsmead surface, helping them secure a series lead. Hazlewood acknowledged that the ability to generate reverse swing provided the Australian attack with an important additional weapon, particularly on pitches where conventional seam movement is limited. The experienced pacer produced a career-best performance in Durban, finishing with figures of 6 for 49 as Australia wrapped up the match with the second new ball. Abrasive Conditions Helped Australia Generate Reverse Swing Reverse swing has not been a prominent feature of Australia's home Tests in recent years, largely because of the greener, seam-friendly pitches used across the country. However, the conditions in South Africa offered a different challenge, with the hard surface and abrasive square accelerating the ball's deterioration. Australia had looked for reverse swing during their two-day warm-up match in Potchefstroom before the opening Test, but the short bowling spells provided limited opportunities to generate it. The situation changed at Kingsmead, where the ball began to show signs of reverse swing as the match progressed. The movement was particularly noticeable during South Africa's second innings, helping Australia put pressure on the home batters. Speaking about the importance of the skill, Hazlewood explained that Australian conditions often make reverse swing less noticeable. He noted that the ball tends to retain its appearance for longer on Australia's grass-covered pitches, whereas the harder, more abrasive surfaces in South Africa help it deteriorate more quickly. Hazlewood also stressed that a combination of a hard ball and a small amount of reverse swing can be more effective than excessive movement with a softer ball. According to the Australian pacer, the extra carry generated by a harder ball makes it more difficult for batters to negotiate the movement. Rabada's Potential Return Could Strengthen South Africa Reverse swing could again become a decisive factor in Gqeberha, particularly if South Africa have Kagiso Rabada available for the upcoming Test. Rabada is widely regarded as an expert exponent of reverse swing, potentially giving the home side an additional weapon against Australia's batting line-up. However, weather conditions could influence how much reverse swing comes into play. Rain has been forecast in the region, while recent rainfall has left the outfield particularly lush. Despite the wet conditions around the ground, the pitch itself was already showing signs of dryness three days before the scheduled start. Hazlewood said the nature of the surface would ultimately determine whether reverse swing became a significant factor again. He explained that a hard, firm and deteriorating pitch with limited conventional seam movement generally creates favourable conditions for reverse swing. Hazlewood Confident After Heavy Workload Hazlewood also expressed confidence in his fitness after returning to a demanding Test workload. The fast bowler has taken six-wicket hauls in two of his three Tests since returning to the side after missing the entire Ashes series. The Durban Test was his first full five-day Test since the 2023 Oval Test, excluding the rain-affected Brisbane match against India in the 2024-25 season. Asked about the nature of pitches in Australia and suggestions that conditions should be adjusted to provide a better balance between bat and ball, Hazlewood responded humorously that he would prefer matches to finish within two days. Both Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc bowled at full run-ups during Australia's training session on Friday. Starc also impressed in the centre-wicket nets while bowling to Marnus Labuschagne and Beau Webster. Boland and Neser Provide Australia with Depth Australia have considerable fast-bowling depth heading into the next Test, with Scott Boland and Michael Neser available as backup options. Boland impressed during practice, putting wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis under pressure as he returned from injury. His presence gives Australia additional flexibility if one of their frontline fast bowlers requires a break or is unavailable. Hazlewood praised Boland's consistency and suggested that the fast bowler would play an important role not only in the ongoing series but also over the next 12 to 18 months. He highlighted Boland's impressive record and the confidence he brings to the bowling group, adding that having a reliable replacement makes it easier for the frontline bowlers to manage their workloads. With Australia looking to maintain their advantage in the series, the combination of experienced fast bowlers, reliable backups and the ability to exploit reverse swing could prove decisive in Gqeberha. The upcoming Test will provide another opportunity for both sides to adapt to the conditions and use the ball effectively as they compete for control of the series.

India fast bowler Arshdeep Singh is doubtful for the series-deciding fifth T20I against West Indies due to a shoulder injury, prompting the interim selection committee, headed by Pragyan Ojha, to add experienced pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar to the squad as cover. Arshdeep sustained the injury during the fourth T20I in Hyderabad when a delivery from West Indies fast bowler Shamar Joseph struck his bicep while he was batting towards the end of India's chase. The incident occurred on the final ball of the match, forcing Arshdeep to retire hurt. According to a statement released by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), a final decision on Arshdeep's participation in the fifth T20I will be taken before the match, depending on his recovery. Bhuvneshwar Kumar Returns as Pace Cover Bhuvneshwar's inclusion comes after his recent recall to India's T20I squad for the upcoming tour of New Zealand. The experienced fast bowler last represented India in November 2022 and has been working towards regaining full match fitness. The 36-year-old reported to the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru last week for a fitness assessment and has since increased his bowling workload in preparation for the New Zealand series. His most recent competitive appearance came in the UPT20 League in September. Bhuvneshwar's return to the national setup follows impressive performances for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) across successive IPL title-winning campaigns. In IPL 2026, he claimed 28 wickets in 16 matches, finishing second on the wickets chart behind Purple Cap winner Kagiso Rabada. India's Pace Options Under Scrutiny Arshdeep has played in all four T20Is against West Indies so far, taking five wickets. His potential absence could leave India with limited specialist fast-bowling options for the series decider. Apart from Arshdeep and Bhuvneshwar, Mayank Yadav and Prince Yadav are the other frontline pace options in the squad. All-rounders Nitish Kumar Reddy and Shivam Dube also provide seam-bowling support. Arshdeep is also part of India's T20I squad scheduled to depart for New Zealand on Sunday. His injury adds to the selection challenges facing the team management, with fast bowlers Prasidh Krishna and Harshit Rana also dealing with injuries ahead of the ODI series in New Zealand. There is also a possibility that some members of India's squad could be released early from the ODI series to prepare for the subsequent two-match Test series. India Squad for Fifth T20I Against West Indies Shreyas Iyer (captain), Abhishek Sharma, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Ishan Kishan (wicketkeeper), Sanju Samson (wicketkeeper), Tilak Varma, Shivam Dube, Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, Ravi Bishnoi, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Arshdeep Singh, Prince Yadav, Mayank Yadav, Naman Dhir and Bhuvneshwar Kumar. The final decision on Arshdeep's availability is expected ahead of the fifth T20I, with India awaiting an update on his recovery before confirming their playing combination for the series decider.
