About

Named after his father’s mentor, PD Washington, Washington Sundar has steadily climbed the ranks in Indian cricket—from age-group levels and the Under-19 stage to representing Tamil Nadu and eventually the IPL side Rising Pune Supergiant. At just 18 years old, Sundar was identified as one of the promising young talents expected to form the backbone of India’s next generation.

Early Career and International Debut

A left-handed top-order batsman who bowls off-spin, Sundar’s first-class debut was relatively understated, following an impressive showing for India in the Under-19 World Cup 2016 in Bangladesh. India finished as runners-up, narrowly losing the final to the West Indies.

Sundar made his One Day International (ODI) debut in 2017 against Sri Lanka as an 18-year-old. Positioned as an auxiliary spinner, he was part of India’s plan to gradually move on from stalwarts like Ravi Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja after the 2017 Champions Trophy disappointment. Although consistent at home, Sundar’s performances were steady rather than spectacular.

Breakthrough in Test Cricket

Sundar’s career took an unexpected turn during India’s 2018-19 tour of Australia. Initially part of the squad as a net bowler, he was suddenly drafted into the playing XI for the 4th Test at the Gabba. Sundar’s crucial partnership with Shardul Thakur helped chip away at Australia’s lead, contributing to India’s famous victory at one of the toughest venues in world cricket.

He followed this up with promising performances during the subsequent home series against England. Unfortunately, an untimely injury disrupted his momentum, keeping him out for a significant period.

In 2024, Sundar was recalled for the home Test series against New Zealand. Despite India suffering a whitewash, Sundar’s individual brilliance stood out, as he recorded his maiden 10-wicket haul in Test cricket.

Washington Sundar’s IPL journey mirrors his international career — a mix of promise, challenges, and moments of brilliance. Initially unsold in the 2017 IPL auction, Sundar joined the now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiant as a replacement for an injured Ravi Ashwin. He made an immediate impact by taking eight wickets in 11 matches and impressing with his ability to contain runs, quickly becoming one of the tournament’s standout players.

In the 2018 IPL auction, Sundar was snapped up for a hefty INR 3.2 crore, but inconsistent opportunities in the Virat Kohli-led Royal Challengers Bangalore saw him struggle to live up to the price tag. The team’s frequent changes in the playing XI hampered his rhythm, particularly with the ball.

Seeking a fresh start, Sundar moved to Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2022. However, his T20 form dipped, and he was often overlooked in favor of spinners like Mayank Markande and Vijayakanth Viyaskanth.

Most recently, in the 2025 IPL auction, Sundar was acquired by the Gujarat Titans, offering him a chance to reestablish himself as a vital all-rounder in the league.
