About
Temba Bavuma holds a unique place in South African cricket history as a trailblazer for black African cricketers. He became the first black African to score a Test century for South Africa and later made history as the first black African captain of the national men's team.
A technically sound and classical right-handed batter, Bavuma is known for his compact style, solid defense, and mental resilience. Though not flamboyant, his grit and consistency have made him a key figure in the Proteas setup.
Mentored by former cricketer Geoffrey Toyana, Bavuma made his first-class debut for Gauteng in 2008 before moving to the Highveld Lions. His consistent performances earned him the vice-captaincy of the Lions in the 2013-14 season.
He made his Test debut against the West Indies in 2014 and soon impressed with a half-century in Bangladesh. His breakthrough came in January 2016 when he scored his maiden Test century against England at Newlands, Cape Town, making him a national symbol of progress and inclusion.
Bavuma also made a mark in white-ball cricket, scoring a century on ODI debut against Ireland in 2016, becoming just the second South African to achieve the feat.
While his international career has been marked by highs and lows—including form slumps and recurring injuries—Bavuma has shown resilience. In March 2021, he was appointed as South Africa's limited-overs captain. However, despite leading the team at the 2022 T20 World Cup, his poor form and lack of interest from SA20 franchises left him feeling “disappointed.”
He bounced back as ODI captain and was in strong form leading up to the 2023 Cricket World Cup. However, a poor tournament performance saw him score just 145 runs at an average of 18.
Despite challenges, Bavuma remains a central figure in South African cricket—a symbol of perseverance, leadership, and a significant step forward in the game’s transformation journey.
