About

One of South Africa’s brightest spin bowling prospects. Despite his tender age, the off-spinner has already played 26 matches for the South African Under-19s and 68 domestic matches across the three formats, which include 40 franchise games for the Dolphins.

Subrayen has long been regarded as a potential Protea, courtesy of his exploits for the Under-19s. He boasts arguably the best bowling stats for a South African age-group player in history with 41 wickets at an average of 13.66 over 24 Youth ODI’s. He was the leading bowler on show during South Africa’s tour to England in July 2011 (14 wickets at 16.14) and took 7 wickets at just 14.42 at the Under-19 World Cup in August 2012, helping Quinton de Kock’s South African side to third-place.

In December 2012, Cricket South Africa produced Subrayen with a scare, as he was identified as one of two bowlers with a suspect action. Nevertheless, after a period of rehabilitation, he was re-tested with his sufficiently modified action and was re-instated to bowl in first-class cricket. He hasn’t looked back since and at the point of writing is the Dolphins front-line spinner in the shorter formats.

Seeking a new opportunity, he headed to England to play league cricket in the Bolton and District Association in 2015. Playing for Flixton, he impressed scoring 225 runs at 32.14 and taking 24 wickets at 10.17 (2 x 5-wicket hauls) before returning home early for personal reasons.
