About
Lockie Ferguson is a genuine fast bowler capable of generating extreme pace from his tall frame, making him a potential match-winner for New Zealand. In an era where many fast bowlers reduce their speed to ensure durability at the international level, Ferguson’s commitment to bowling fast has remained unwavering, despite being injury-prone.
His raw pace earned him a first-class debut in the 2012–13 season, and within a few years he began to make a strong impact. Ferguson rose to prominence during the 2014–15 first-class season, claiming 21 wickets, followed by an even better return of 31 wickets the next season. These performances caught the attention of the selectors, leading to his international debut in December 2016 when he replaced the injured Adam Milne in New Zealand’s ODI squad against Australia. He made his T20I debut in early 2017.
Although he has played only a limited number of international matches and his statistics remain inconsistent, Ferguson’s ability to influence games on his day is unquestionable. The New Zealand team management values his unique skill set and is keen to manage his workload carefully, viewing him as a long-term asset in limited-overs cricket.
Ferguson primarily bowls attacking lines and relies heavily on pace, making him especially dangerous against batters uncomfortable with short-pitched bowling. However, his aggressive approach can sometimes affect his economy rate, particularly on batting-friendly surfaces if he fails to maintain the right line and length.
Ferguson’s rise as an express fast bowler coincided with success in the Indian Premier League. In 2017, he earned a contract with Rising Pune Supergiant at a base price of 50 lakh. His raw speed and clever variations impressed IPL scouts, and in the 2019 auction, Kolkata Knight Riders secured his services for 1.6 crore after a bidding contest with Kings XI Punjab. He represented KKR from 2019 to 2021 before being picked by Gujarat Titans for IPL 2022, where he took 12 wickets. Ahead of IPL 2023, Ferguson was traded back to Kolkata Knight Riders.
