About
A product of South Amsterdam club Groen & Wit, Shariz Ahmad developed his game alongside his father Nadeem and elder brother Musa. The diminutive wrist-spinner quickly emerged as one of the most promising talents in the Dutch youth and academy system, finishing as the leading wicket-taker for the Netherlands during their 2021 Under-19 qualifying campaign.
Ahmad’s career took a significant step forward when he followed his brother to Voorburg Cricket Club in 2022. Attracted by top-division competition and the opportunity to play on turf wickets, he flourished in stronger domestic conditions.
That same year, Ahmad earned his first senior cap for the Netherlands national cricket team. Like many of his generation, he was introduced to international cricket in challenging circumstances, making his senior debut against the West Indies cricket team in the ODI Super League. He made an immediate impact, claiming Kyle Mayers as his maiden international wicket and finishing with an impressive 1 for 28.
A call-up followed for the 2022 T20 World Cup Qualifier, where Ahmad returned four wickets for 79 runs at an economy rate just over six. Despite a commendable performance, he narrowly missed selection for the tournament proper.
On the domestic front, Ahmad continued to excel. He claimed 31 wickets in his debut season for Voorburg before topping the wicket charts in the 2023 Topklasse season with 47 scalps. His standout performance for the national side also came in 2023, when he registered his maiden ODI five-wicket haul against Zimbabwe national cricket team during the Netherlands’ final Super League tour.
Known for his sharply turning googlies delivered at a deceptive pace and angle, Ahmad has shown the ability to challenge even world-class batters. A lively presence in the field with a strong and accurate arm, he is yet to make a significant impact with the bat at international level. However, his domestic record suggests he has the potential to develop into a valuable all-round asset for Dutch cricket.
