About

A bowling all-rounder of South African origin, Michael Neser moved to Australia at the turn of the millennium and quickly began making an impression through age-group cricket. His all-round abilities earned him selection in the Queensland Under-19 side for the 2008–09 season, and consistent performances soon propelled him into Queensland’s Sheffield Shield squad for the 2010–11 season.

Unlike many limited-overs all-rounders who are viewed as bits-and-pieces players, Neser has maintained a solid balance between bat and ball. His medium pace may not be express, but it is effective and capable of troubling batters, while his batting has proven valuable in the lower order. While Neser has been a dependable all-rounder in the domestic circuit, the Big Bash League showcased him more prominently as a strike bowler.

Strong BBL performances earned him an IPL opportunity with Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2013, though his stint was brief and forgettable. After a lean 2016–17 season, Neser rebounded impressively in Sheffield Shield cricket, taking 39 wickets and 33 wickets in the following two seasons. This sustained consistency brought international recognition.

Neser made his ODI debut for Australia in 2018 and was included in the touring party for the 2019 Ashes in England. His long-awaited Test debut finally came in November 2021. He claimed his maiden five-wicket haul in Test cricket in December 2022, but despite strong performances, struggled to cement a permanent place in Australia’s Test XI.

Though never a regular at the international level, Neser has remained firmly in contention as a dependable domestic performer and a valuable depth option for Australia.
