Finn Allen's Blazing Unbeaten 72 Powers Trent Rockets to Top of The Hundred Table

New Zealand opener Finn Allen produced a scintillating unbeaten 72 off just 35 balls to guide Trent Rockets to a commanding six-wicket victory over Manchester Super Giants in a top-of-the-table clash in The Hundred at Emirates Old Trafford on Friday.

Chasing a modest target of 138, the Rockets completed the chase with 13 balls to spare, thanks to Allen's explosive innings that anchored the run chase despite an early wobble.

The visitors suffered an immediate setback when Ben Duckett was bowled by England pacer Gus Atkinson off the second ball of the innings after attempting an ambitious scoop shot. Tom Banton soon followed, dismissed by Sonny Baker, leaving the Rockets under early pressure.

Allen, however, steadied the innings alongside Sam Billings. The pair counterattacked effectively against both pace and spin, adding a brisk 50-run partnership from just 25 balls. Allen survived a difficult caught-and-bowled chance offered to Liam Dawson on 32 and made the most of the reprieve, bringing up his half-century in only 23 deliveries.

Although Billings fell to Atkinson and Tim David was dismissed by Baker, Mitchell Santner played a valuable supporting role with an unbeaten 24 off 17 balls. Together, Santner and Allen ensured there were no further hiccups as Trent Rockets sealed victory and moved to the top of The Hundred standings.

Earlier, Manchester Super Giants made a steady start after being asked to bat, reaching 38 without loss at the end of the powerplay. However, England all-rounder Craig Overton turned the game in the Rockets' favour with a superb spell, claiming three crucial wickets.

Overton dismissed openers Tim Seifert and Aiden Markram before removing the dangerous Heinrich Klaasen for a two-ball duck, reducing the Super Giants to a precarious position.

On a pitch that offered assistance to the bowlers, Jos Buttler and Leus du Plooy struggled to accelerate against the disciplined bowling of Mitchell Santner and Lewis Gregory. The pair eventually found momentum late in the innings, with du Plooy launching a six off Matt Henry before adding another maximum against Mohammad Amir.

Buttler finished strongly, smashing two boundaries and a six in the closing stages to register his third successive half-century. He remained unbeaten on 55, while du Plooy contributed an unbeaten 40 as Manchester Super Giants posted 137 for 3.

Despite the late flourish, the total proved insufficient against Allen's aggressive strokeplay.

Named the Meerkat Match Hero, Allen admitted the chase was not straightforward in the early stages.

"It was tough at the start. They bowled well and challenged us. They have a pretty impressive bowling attack. I wanted to build a good foundation and absorb the pressure where I could," Allen said after the match.

Reflecting on his return to The Hundred, the Kiwi batter added, "The first game was definitely a shock to the system because everything happens so quickly. But I try to approach it like any other game and stick to the same processes."

The victory strengthens Trent Rockets' position at the summit of The Hundred table and reinforces their credentials as one of the tournament's strongest contenders.
