Dom Sibley's Century Powers Surrey to 19-Run Victory Over Gloucestershire

Dom Sibley struck a composed century while Rory Burns narrowly missed out on three figures as Surrey defeated Gloucestershire by 19 runs in a Metro Bank One-Day Cup day-night clash at the Seat Unique Stadium on Friday.

After being asked to bat first, Surrey posted a competitive 311 for 5, thanks to Sibley's 101 and Burns' fluent 89. Gloucestershire mounted a spirited chase, led by Graeme van Buuren's aggressive 85, but were eventually bowled out for 292 in 49 overs.

Opening batter Sibley anchored Surrey's innings with a patient 101 off 126 balls, registering his sixth List A century. He shared a crucial 143-run partnership for the third wicket with Burns, whose entertaining 89 came off a run-a-ball innings featuring 12 boundaries and a six.

Surrey adopted a measured approach on a sluggish surface that offered variable bounce. Following the early loss of a wicket, Sibley and Adam Thomas rebuilt the innings with an 88-run stand before Thomas departed for 41 after edging Daz Ahmed behind to wicketkeeper James Bracey.

Sibley enjoyed a slice of fortune on 46 when Ahmed failed to hold a return catch, and the missed opportunity proved costly. The opener reached his fifty from 71 deliveries before accelerating steadily alongside Burns, whose positive strokeplay kept the scoreboard moving through the middle overs.

Sibley completed his century with nine boundaries before edging Jack Taylor behind, while Burns fell just 11 runs short of a maiden List A hundred when he was dismissed by Ollie Price in the 45th over. A late cameo of 36 from just 17 balls by Josh Blake ensured Surrey crossed the 300-run mark.

Gloucestershire made a bright start to their chase as openers James Bracey and Cameron Bancroft added 70 runs inside the first nine overs. Bracey raced to 39 from 29 deliveries, hitting eight boundaries, while Bancroft contributed a brisk 33.

However, Surrey seized control after Hishaam Khan dismissed Bracey, triggering a dramatic collapse. Gloucestershire lost five wickets for just 63 runs as James Taylor, Tom Ealham, Benji Floros and Adam Thomas chipped in with key breakthroughs.

With the hosts struggling, Graeme van Buuren launched a spirited counterattack. The left-hander smashed 85 off 79 balls and added valuable partnerships to keep Gloucestershire in the contest. He shared a 52-run stand with Daz Ahmed for the seventh wicket, but the required run rate continued to climb.

Taylor dismissed Ahmed at a crucial stage before Floros effected the run-out of Aman Rao, ending Gloucestershire's resistance. Ralphie Albert finished with three wickets, while Taylor claimed two as Surrey completed a hard-fought victory.

The win was built on disciplined batting from Sibley and Burns before Surrey's bowlers held their nerve to overcome Van Buuren's late assault and secure a valuable 19-run triumph in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup.
