About
Tony de Zorzi, a 20-year-old left-hander, is regarded as one of South Africa’s promising young prospects. He made an early impression in age-group tournaments and progressed steadily through the domestic system. Although he had not featured in top-tier first-class cricket initially, his selection by the Pretoria Mavericks for the inaugural edition of the Global T20 League signaled growing recognition of his potential and offered him a valuable platform to advance his career.
De Zorzi made his Test and ODI debuts in 2023 against the West Indies during their tour of South Africa. His introduction to international cricket was challenging, and he had to wait until later in the year for another opportunity. He was subsequently included in the ODI and Test squads against India, where he made a significant impact by scoring his maiden ODI century—an unbeaten 119 that helped South Africa level the series.
With Dean Elgar retiring from Test cricket and Quinton de Kock stepping away from ODIs, an opening has emerged at the top of the order. De Zorzi now has a strong opportunity to establish himself in that role and secure a long-term place in the national side.
