About
“I always wanted to be a bit different,” says Suryakumar Yadav, a sentiment that perfectly captures his unorthodox brilliance with the bat. From his signature pick-up flicks over fine leg to dispatching yorkers over the ropes, SKY, as he’s fondly called, has redefined the art of T20 batting with flair and innovation.
Despite being a late entrant into India’s T20I setup, Suryakumar made an instant impact. His cricketing journey began under his uncle’s guidance before he honed his skills at the Elf Vengsarkar Academy. He debuted in first-class cricket for Mumbai in 2010-11, scoring a gritty 73 against Delhi. A stellar 2011-12 Ranji season followed, where he topped Mumbai’s charts with 754 runs, earning the MA Chidambaram Trophy for the best U-22 cricketer.
His IPL journey began with Mumbai Indians in 2011 but it was during his stint with Kolkata Knight Riders that he first gained recognition for his improvisational batting. Playing key cameos in the lower order, he was part of KKR’s title-winning 2014 campaign. However, it was his return to MI in 2018 that marked a turning point. Promoted to opener, he amassed 512 runs that season and continued his rise with consistent performances in the following years, becoming a linchpin in MI’s 2019 and 2020 title wins.
SKY’s long-awaited India debut came in March 2021 against England, and he announced himself with a six off his very first ball. After a quiet 2021 T20 World Cup, he exploded in 2022, notching centuries against England, New Zealand, and Sri Lanka. He ended the year as the third-highest scorer at the T20 World Cup and was named the ICC T20I Cricketer of the Year.
In the 2023 IPL, SKY was back at his destructive best, scoring 605 runs in 16 matches for MI. Later that year, he was part of India’s ODI World Cup squad, but both his and India’s campaign ended in disappointment with a loss in the final.
Yet, SKY etched his name in Indian cricket folklore during the 2024 T20 World Cup. In a tense final against South Africa, it was his sensational catch on the long-off boundary to dismiss David Miller that sealed India’s victory. With Rohit Sharma retiring from T20Is, SKY was named India’s new captain in the format.
As captain, Suryakumar has led India to T20I series wins in Sri Lanka, South Africa, and a dominant home win over England. Under his leadership, a new generation of fearless cricketers like Abhishek Sharma and Tilak Varma has flourished. While his personal form has seen a dip since taking the helm, his influence on India’s white-ball future remains profound.
