About
Widely regarded as one of the greatest Test batters of his era—and arguably of all time—Steven Smith’s career is a remarkable tale of transformation and redemption. Beginning his journey as a leg-spinning all-rounder, Smith faced heavy criticism for his early selection in the Australian team. However, the New South Wales cricketer silenced doubters by reinventing himself into a world-class batter.
Smith made his domestic debut in the 2007–08 season and earned national selection in limited-overs cricket in 2010, followed by his Test debut later that year in England. Initially batting low in the order, his selection in the 2010–11 Ashes was questioned, and after Australia lost the series, Smith was dropped from all formats. Many believed his true potential lay in batting rather than bowling—a view famously supported by Greg Chappell.
His resurgence came during the 2013 Ashes in England, where his unorthodox technique and mental toughness stood out. From the 2013–14 season onward, Smith’s rise was meteoric. Stellar performances against India, South Africa, and England established him as the world’s leading Test batter, earning him the No.1 Test ranking in 2015. That same year, he played a vital role in Australia’s World Cup triumph.
Smith’s career faced a major setback during the 2018 ball-tampering scandal in South Africa, resulting in a one-year ban. His comeback in 2019 was extraordinary, highlighted by a dominant Ashes series in England where he amassed a mountain of runs. Though he faced periods of inconsistency afterward, Smith continued to deliver in key moments, including Australia’s World Test Championship win in 2023.
In the IPL, Smith evolved from a lower-order contributor into a leader and dependable top-order batter. Despite ups and downs, his legacy remains that of resilience, adaptability, and sustained excellence at the highest level.
