About
Born in Hong Kong to a Chinese mother and a New Zealand father, Mark Chapman is one of the rare cricketers to have represented two nations at the international level. A naturally gifted left-handed batter with an attacking mindset, Chapman first came into the spotlight at the 2009 Under-19 World Cup, representing Hong Kong at just 15 years old.
Chapman quickly established himself as a key player in Hong Kong's emerging cricket scene. He made his World Cricket League debut in 2011, and his contributions with the bat were pivotal in helping Hong Kong earn promotion from Division Three to Division Two. Despite operating in a mostly amateur setup, Chapman’s quality was unmistakable.
A holder of dual passports, Chapman made use of his eligibility to play in New Zealand and debuted in first-class cricket for Auckland during the 2015–16 domestic season. Although he had already played 2 ODIs and 19 T20Is for Hong Kong, he qualified as a local player in New Zealand, owing to his citizenship.
Chapman transitioned to New Zealand’s national side following a strong domestic run and was seen as a key middle-order option, particularly in the T20 format. His natural stroke-making ability, versatility in the batting order, and fearless approach earned him a spot in New Zealand’s white-ball squads, especially with more opportunities opening up after Ross Taylor’s retirement.
Did You Know?
Mark Chapman is one of only ten players in history—and the only player from an associate nation—to score a century on ODI debut. He achieved this remarkable feat with an unbeaten 124 against the United Arab Emirates in Dubai.
Now a regular feature in New Zealand’s white-ball setup, Chapman continues to bring flair and adaptability to the middle order and remains a unique figure in world cricket for his dual-international status and multicultural background.
