About

Joe Root, born 30 December 1990, comes from a strong cricketing family, with his grandfather captaining Rotherham CC and his younger brother Billy playing for Glamorgan. Root’s talent was evident early, earning him scholarships at the Bunbury Festival, Workshop College, and Yorkshire Cricket Academy. He made his Yorkshire Second XI debut in 2007 with a fifty, and by 2010 he had become a standout performer for England Under-19s, earning a three-year professional contract with Yorkshire.

Root made his County Championship debut in 2011, and his breakthrough came in 2012 with an undefeated 222 against Hampshire. His consistent form earned him a Test call-up for England’s historic series win in India in 2012, where he impressed with a composed 73 on debut in Nagpur. Root soon became a reliable all-format player, scoring his maiden Test century against New Zealand and delivering crucial innings in the 2013 Ashes and Champions Trophy.

Root’s career flourished with landmark performances, including 134 and 130 in the 2015 Ashes and a career-best 254 against Pakistan. By 2016, he was England’s leading batsman, consistently scoring fifties and hundreds, particularly in challenging overseas conditions in India and Sri Lanka.

In 2017, Root succeeded Alastair Cook as England’s Test captain, overseeing home series victories and historic wins in Sri Lanka. However, he faced heavy criticism during tough tours, notably the 2017-18 and 2021-22 Ashes in Australia, which eventually led him to relinquish the captaincy. Freed from leadership duties, Root thrived under the Bazball philosophy, rejuvenating his batting and expanding his range of shots. In 2022, he became the youngest English batter to reach 10,000 Test runs at 31 years and 157 days.

Root has also been a key figure in England’s ODI and World Cup campaigns, contributing significantly to the 2019 World Cup victory with 556 runs from 11 innings. He made his IPL debut in 2023 with Rajasthan Royals. Known for his consistency, adaptability, and off-spin bowling, Root serves as the stabilizing backbone of England’s batting line-up, particularly under aggressive, modern approaches.
