Dasun Shanaka is a hard-hitting allrounder who brings late-order firepower with the bat and useful medium-pace bowling capable of generating swing. A product of the famed Sinhalese Sports Club, Shanaka has carved out his career through perseverance after early flashes of promise and periods of inconsistency.

After a few years of steady performances in domestic T20 and one-day cricket, Shanaka announced himself in emphatic fashion in 2015, when he struck two whirlwind centuries in club cricket. Although he had already made his T20I debut against Pakistan, those innings thrust him into the spotlight, an opportunity he capitalised on with a three-wicket haul against India on a green Pune pitch in 2016.

Shanaka’s Test debut followed soon after on the tour of England, but it was his ODI debut against Ireland that truly stood out. He became only the third Sri Lankan to claim a five-wicket haul on ODI debut and was named Player of the Series for his all-round contribution.

Despite those highlights, Shanaka struggled to cement a permanent spot in the national side. Batting low in the order limited his opportunities to make consistent impacts, and he remained in and out of the team across formats over the next three years.

The challenges intensified in 2017 when Shanaka was fined 75 percent of his match fee after being found guilty of ball tampering during a Test match against India in Nagpur — a setback that threatened to derail his international career.

Shanaka responded strongly the following year. In 2018, he produced a blistering 34-ball 65 in an ODI against South Africa, an innings featuring four fours and five sixes that signalled his return to form. Later that year, he was appointed captain of Sri Lanka’s T20I side for the tour of Pakistan after several senior players withdrew due to security concerns.

Leading a largely inexperienced squad, Shanaka etched his name into Sri Lankan cricket history by guiding the team to a remarkable 3–0 series victory over Pakistan — then the world’s top-ranked T20I side — on their home soil.

That series proved to be a defining moment in Shanaka’s career, underlining his leadership qualities and resilience. From setbacks to success, Shanaka’s journey reflects the grit required to survive and thrive at the highest level of international cricket.
