About

Daryl Mitchell is a versatile New Zealand all-rounder and the son of former national rugby coach John Mitchell. A right-handed middle-order batsman and medium-pace bowler, Mitchell made his First-class debut in the 2011–12 season for Northern Districts and quickly established himself across formats. His adaptability, shaped by a disciplined sporting upbringing, has been central to his success—something he credits to his father’s influence.

Primarily a solid middle-order batter, Mitchell builds his innings on a strong foundation, gradually expanding his range of strokes. While his bowling is not his primary strength, he has a knack for picking up key wickets using clever variations, especially slower deliveries.

Mitchell's breakthrough came in the 2018–19 domestic season, where impressive performances in the Super Smash earned him a T20I debut against India in February 2019. He was instrumental in New Zealand’s run to the final of the 2021 T20 World Cup, scoring 208 runs at a strike rate of 140.54 and averaging 34.67, having been promoted to open the innings alongside Martin Guptill.

His early experience playing in Perth helped him master pace and bounce, a trait that continues to serve him well in international cricket. Since 2021, Mitchell has been a regular fixture in New Zealand’s lineup, contributing across all formats.

One of his standout moments in Test cricket came during New Zealand’s 2022 tour of England, where he amassed 538 runs at an astonishing average of 107.6, despite the team losing the series 3–0 to England’s Bazball approach. He followed it up with a stellar performance in the 2023 ODI World Cup, including a brilliant century in the semi-final against India.

Outside international cricket, Mitchell has been active in franchise leagues worldwide. He has represented London Spirit in The Hundred and was signed by Chennai Super Kings for the 2024 IPL season.
