About
If scoring a century on County Championship debut wasn't impressive enough, Andrew Umeed followed it up with another masterclass — this time in the inaugural pink-ball Championship fixture at Edgbaston, facing a formidable Lancashire attack led by James Anderson, arguably England’s greatest swing bowler. Such feats are rare, and Warwickshire certainly believes they’ve unearthed a special talent in the Glasgow-born right-hander.
Andrew Robert Isaac Umeed is not your typical modern-day cricketer. He brings an old-school charm to the crease — a textbook technique, infinite patience, and a methodical approach that reflects in his batting style. Umeed first made his First-class debut for Scotland in the ICC Intercontinental Cup against Afghanistan in 2015. That same year, after narrowly missing out on selection for the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup, despite being part of Scotland’s 24-man preliminary squad, Umeed took his next big step: joining Warwickshire.
He wasted no time in making an impression. In 2016, during his County debut against Durham, Umeed scored a sublime century in a match where none of his teammates managed to reach even a fifty in either innings. A year later, he etched his name into the history books again — this time by scripting the second slowest century (by time) in County cricket history, batting for a staggering 429 minutes (over seven hours) to reach three figures in a pink-ball Championship fixture. That innings spoke volumes about his grit, temperament, and unwavering focus.
But Umeed's journey began even earlier. At just 17, he was nearly picked up by Durham before signing with Warwickshire. To further hone his skills, he also took advantage of his family connections in Pakistan, spending time at the Saeed Ajmal Academy, where he focused on refining his leg-spin and sharpening his all-round cricketing acumen. Though he bowls occasional legbreaks, it’s with the bat that Umeed truly finds his identity and purpose.
Despite early setbacks, including missing out on the World Cup, Umeed has shown maturity beyond his years. His journey reflects the story of a patient builder — someone more interested in constructing an innings brick by brick than chasing fireworks. In an age dominated by aggression and innovation, Umeed is a reminder of the enduring value of classical batting — and he’s just getting started.
