About
Left-arm fast bowler Kwena Maphaka rose to prominence with a sensational performance at the 2024 ICC U19 World Cup, where he claimed 21 wickets at a stunning average of 9.71. His dominant displays earned him the Player of the Tournament award and firmly established him as one of the most exciting young prospects in world cricket. Combining raw pace with swing, Maphaka consistently troubled opposition batters with the new ball.
Maphaka had already made history as one of the youngest participants in the 2022 U19 World Cup in the Caribbean at just 15 years old. He made his first-class debut a year later during South Africa A’s tour of Sri Lanka.
Born in Johannesburg, his meteoric rise continued after his second U19 World Cup, leading to an IPL contract with the Mumbai Indians for the 2024 season. His impressive performances fast-tracked him into the senior national setup.
In January 2025, Maphaka became the 134th player to represent South Africa in Test cricket since readmission, making his debut against Pakistan at Newlands, Cape Town. By that point, he had already featured in both T20Is and ODIs for the Proteas, marking a rapid and promising start to what looks like a stellar international career.
