About

Erstwhile Cape Cobras all-rounder Sybrand “SA” Engelbrecht first came to prominence taking a spectacular leaping catch for his native South Africa at the 2008 Under 19 World Cup, yet despite his early promise struggled to hold down a place in the Cobras first team. He spent much of his career labouring in the second tier provincial competition, though his occasional appearances for the Cobras did include memorable turns at the 2009 and 2014 Champions League T20, where his off-spin served the side well.

Forced to remodel his action a year later, Engelbrecht found himself cut from the roster altogether in 2016 and elected to pursue a career in business, which would eventually take him to the Netherlands and prove an unexpected route to international cricket. Having spent a season in Holland with HBS Craeyenhout in 2015, Engelbrecht returned permanently five years later to take up a position with investment firm (and Netherlands sponsor) Fairtree. Joining Voorburg CC, he went on to lead the club to their first national championship in 22 years in 2022. By then already caught the eye of national selectors, and was called up to the A side immediately upon fulfilling the residence criteria for Netherlands eligibility. Scoring 150 runs without being dismissed in a two match series against Guernsey was enough to earn him selection to the senior side, joining the squad just ahead of the 2023 World Cup.

A capable bat against spin with the ability to clear the ropes and above all experience in India, Engelbrecht ticks a lot of boxes where the Netherlands are otherwise lacking. Though he has bowled little even in domestic cricket since coming back from a shoulder operation in 2021, he remains an outstanding fielder and all-round asset for his adopted country.
