About

Inspired by the legendary Brian Lara, Alick Athanaze’s elegant and aggressive strokeplay often reflects the influence of the great southpaw. Hailing from Dominica, Athanaze faced adversity early on when Hurricane Maria struck in 2017, damaging his home and cricket equipment just before he left for a training camp in St. Lucia. Despite communication being cut off for weeks, Athanaze used these challenges as motivation to pursue his cricketing ambitions.

He was the second-highest run-scorer in the 2018 U19 World Cup, behind only Shubman Gill. Continuing his strong domestic form, Athanaze topped the charts in the 2022-23 West Indies Championship, the region’s premier four-day tournament.

Athanaze made his Test debut against India in Dominica, emerging as West Indies’ leading run-scorer in the match with impressive strokeplay. Earlier that month, he also debuted in ODIs against the UAE, scoring a rapid 65 and equalling the record for the joint fastest fifty on debut.

In 2024, Athanaze was part of the West Indies squad that drew a Test series 1-1 against Australia. He notched his first Test fifty with a commanding 82 at Trent Bridge against England, helping his team take the first-innings lead.

In the Caribbean Premier League, Athanaze was picked by the Barbados Royals in 2023 and retained for the 2024 season, marking him as a promising talent in both international and franchise cricket.
