About
2018 was a breakout year for Nandre Burger. He first earned a call-up to the South Africa Emerging side in July, and later joined Cape Town Blitz in the inaugural Mzansi Super League (MSL), replacing the injured Anrich Nortje.
Having begun his provincial cricket journey in the 2015-16 season, Burger steadily climbed the ranks, eventually representing the Highveld Lions. His standout performance came in the 2017-18 Provincial One-Day Cup, where he topped the wicket charts in South Africa’s second-tier List A competition.
Despite consistent domestic displays, Burger’s path to international cricket seemed uncertain amidst South Africa’s strong pace arsenal featuring Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, Marco Jansen, and Anrich Nortje.
However, his fortunes shifted in 2023 when he entered the IPL auction and was picked up by the Rajasthan Royals at his base price. Soon after, he earned a national call-up for the ODI and Test series against India. Making his debut in both formats, Burger impressed particularly in the Test arena, troubling Indian batters with pace and swing as South Africa secured a dominant win at Newlands.
